So. Until I find time to go buy a new helmet with Ingo at my side, I take his helmet. With a cap underneath it looks stupid, but works.
Thank you, guys, you convinced me it´s really worth wearing one.
So, today I hopped on the bike and had a look around on the way to the gym: I counted - me included - 39 bikers (both ways).
37 wore no helmet, only one other guy did! Felt like being exotic!
How come? Is a helmet more accepted by bikers elsewhere?
Seems the place Ingo has to call his home for supposedly three weeks is also rather exotic (he started rehab today). E-Mail? Possible, but... 10 cents per minute! Bet they only have a 56k-modem...
TV? Nope. Just for a whole lotta money. He brought his DVD-player with which you could watch TV - no connection.
He just called me - standing on the window sill, otherwise no receiving.
So, since he forgot to take books, it´s radio (and maybe TV in the car, if he finds a spot). Poor man!

In Australia it is law to wear a bicycle helmet. It is most unusual to see people without helmets. Some younger people don't wear one, but that's more rebelling against authority than anything else. At school you are taught about wearing helmets, like when you are taught how to cross the road. It is not a big deal to wear one - most people don't even question it.
It is law?! Wow. There you go thinking Germany is the land of bureaucracy, but obviously they fail to put up reasonable laws here!
I'm not sure if there is a law here requiring adult cyclists to wear helmets -- such a law would vary by state (and we have 50 states). I think my state has a law that requires parents to put helmets on their children if the child is riding with an adult on a bicycle.
But in the US, we have more autos and fewer designated bike lanes, and so any cyclist would be crazy NOT to wear a helmet.
You can replace a bicycle if it "loses" an encounter with an auto, but you can't replace your own brains.

Not even parents have to have their kids wear a helmet. Sooo many kids without here! So stupid!
My 3 year old only rides on the footpath, and the rule is NO HELMET, NO BIKE at our house! But as Celeste says its also the law
Yup ... our rule is the same ... no helmet, no biking. I don't know if it's the law here, but people pretty much consider someone without a helmet an idiot. Please wear a helmet. :~)
