I join Rain's Thursday Art and Dinner Date with "bells" today.
Well, actually with a mini bell. Oh, we "hated" this bell.
December 24th eve. Bro and I had to stay in our rooms (or his as I´d moved out) till our Father rang the bell as a sign Santa has been there.
I was in my twenties and Bro... well, five years younger.
Dad was a man of traditions! And there was no way to get by this darn bell. Must ask Bro if he still has it and if he "tortures" his daughters with it, too!
It was made of porcelain. White, with something on we never saw.
Before there was the bell a "real" Santa came - as real as you can be in a brown leather-coat!
My parents forced me into the Austrian Dirndl they brought visiting friends there, oh, how I hated that. Felt like a clown and reckon they heated the house up high - it´s cold in winter in Germany!
Sadly, so-so-so sadly Bro let those chairs rot in the attic. They are no more.
Back in the day we often got clothes for Xmas - can you relate?
But I DO LOVE all the lights at Christmas time! I just look to the left and see my neighbor´s orange star shining bright! Or...
And,, well, time runs... said pharmacy wishes us to...
And... always be good! Cause...
(In case you don´t know her: Die Maus "is a German children's television series, popular nation-wide for its educational content" (wiki) - since 1971 and we watch it every Sunday still, like many of this generation.)
Food-wise.. No eggs at home but "old", cooked potatoes and some ham in cubes?
And no time to cook?
Fry the potatoes with ham, add salt, pepper - let them go crispy (work a bit meanwhile, ahh the joy of working at home!), then take cheese, is even yummier than eggs!!!
(Certainly not healthier, though, oh, but, so what, do more sport later)

I love using up old potatoes!!! This past week I used them for corn and potato soup! Delightful.
Never heard of that soup! Interesting. Here you only get sweet corn in a tin. I cannot imagine that in a soup?

Yes. Now I nearly would say: Sadly no more. I sure miss this darn thing. And my Dad...

Now how could you hate such a beautiful little bell ... Oh, I know, especially as a child, it is hard to wait for things, but what fun and excitement it would bring while you wait. Many fond memories of Christmas past. And the food, though simple, looks delicious. And the train video ... impressive. it will stop automatically when something is on the track? That is a long time coming. Hope they bring it over here (USA) soon. Always fun to visit you, Iris ... Stay warm :)

Funny story about the bell, it rings in good memories even though you didn't like it back then.
I made mine with organic tinned corn and it came out great. Fresh corn is fun too though it's out of season where I live.

You were too old for the tradition, but your Dad enjoyed it still, I guess because to him you are still his children.
I remember getting clothes for Christmas, usually a new bathing suit for the beach each year and those plastic sandals that all kids wore back then to the beach. Then we would each get one other thing that we would like, one year for my sister a chain driven big red tricyle, for me a doll and pram (how I hated that) and for my brother a go-kart with a tiny engine. He didn't like it and cried for a tricycle the same as J, so my parents took the go-kart back to the shop and came back with a blue tricycle for him.
Wir hatten auch so ein Weihnachtsglöckchen, allerdings nur, so lange wir wirklich Kinder waren. Später haben wir es nur noch hin und wieder aus Nostalgie benutzt, und nicht unbedingt an Heilig Abend. Ach die Maus - wir haben mehrere Maus DVDs mit nach USA gebracht, als wir hierher kamen, so dass unsere Tochter damit aufwachsen konnte. Ich habe sie sogar manchmal im Deutschunterricht gezeigt, als ich noch Kinder unterrichtete. Das kam immer gut an. Ich würde es auch noch gucken, wenn wir in Deutschland lebten. Dirndl habe ich früher viel getragen, meine Mutter hatte einige sogar selbst genäht. Mir gefielen sie, und ich würde auch heute eins tragen. Das ALSTOM Video war faszinierend - ich würde mich zwar nicht dahin stellen, aber es passiert ja manchmal, dass ein Auto auf den Schienen steht, und da ist es doch eine tolle Technologie, wenn der Zug stoppt. Wenn alles funktioniert... Allerdings denke ich, dass immer ein "richtiger" Fahrer da sein sollte, egal ob im Auto, Zug, Flugzeug...

Hi Iris! This is a great post, I love what you made to eat!! So simple and delicious! Okay, the automated locomotive? Yikes. I don't like the word "automated" attached to ANY vehicle! Your bell story made me smile, and even as adults you had to wait for the bell to ring lol...you look so cute in your photo there! ☺
