A lovely drawing and letter to welcome you home.
I see lots of people smoking outside the hospitals, but they have to go far out almost to the footpath, smoking near the doors isn't allowed. When my Dad was dying in Port Augusta hospital he would go out to the verandah and smoke, he figured it couldn't do him any more harm than already done and then he died a week later.
Yes, I was really happy about the letter.
The girl was really directly by the door and I think she was a patient, too.
Your Dad was probably right.
Both my parents fought hard to quit, it made them even more miserable but it was too late anyway.

Our last govt was doing their best to make the country smoke free but now the new govt have undone it all, it's sad. Cigarettes are so expensive here, an average 25 packet will be amount $35 nzd.

What a sweet welcome home. Hand-written letters are a rarity these days.
You asked about what professional storytelling is. It is the art of sharing tales orally--not reading, using notes or the like. A performance was often an hour, could be longer or shorter, and might include from one to a number of shorter tales. Like any art, there is a wide variety of styles and methods. In my case, I concentrated on the stories from the Appalachian region, although my repertoire included world folktales too. Storytelling isn't memorization, usually, although some tellers do memorize their stories. But I found that each audience required adjustments to the tales...variation of vocabulary, for example, if there were unfamiliar terms. I used a variety of techniques, from audience participation to puppetry with children, to ballad-singing, etc.
I don't know if I have explained very clearly, it's a big topic!
