Old Critter

I was offended by my young customer because I am old, a dinosaur.

Sales as critter, huh? With which I join Eileen :-)

It took me 8 semesters to get my degree - time I did not have a proper job, earned no money.
Time that is missing on my "list" for getting retirement-money (we won´t get much anyways).

Good thing times have changed and learned knowledge tops a stupid degree!

But back in my day a degree did count a lot.
And I think it opened the door to my first job - which was a totally different one from what I´d studied - irony!

Now my jobs flip like crazy anyways.
All you need is work- and life-experience.
What a waste of time that was back then!

In my official work-signature you still have to read
"Dipl-Ing (FH).

FH stands for Fachhochschule - I had to work with my hands. I can... no back then I worked on wood-working machines with which you actually create real doors etc, not models, I soldiered etc, etc....
I do not dare these days no more.

Did I ever need this in real life?
No.
So much I learned I never needed, so much I missed and could need...

Dinosaurs will always be around - who knows how it will be like in 20 years???

These days I get a new project all the time and start at zero...
Without a diploma, on the run.

Henry 🦁

... and sometimes for the better.

Hello Iris,
I love your dinosaur, I am old too so I must be one too.
I agree with the work-life experience.
Henry is right on.. the world is changing fast.
Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a wonderful weekend. PS, thank you for leaving me a comment!

Eileen, yes, the world is changing fast and we have to run along, dinosaur or not!
Or Lion or not ;-) At least our brains stay fresh this way - to a happy Saturday and thank you for hosting.

I think that learned knowledge is something you get as you get old-not that you nor I am of course. Grin. You can't expect someone right out of school to have it. It's a shame society (at least here in the US) doesn't appreciate learned knowledge as much as it used to. And I love your dino with the colorful back scales. hugs-Erika

I agree and don't! Some of that stuff we never need because we don't use it in our own daily lives. BUT it can still matter to learn it because we have a different appreciation for those who actually do that work. You probably picked up a certain dexterity working with those tools or a creative approach or some other skill or knowledge that infiltrates other things you do -- how you think or see. I had to take biology, which I hated, but in dissecting a frog (something I never, ever will do again!) I learned about the body, what things are like "inside" and how to very gently take things apart. It helped me understand. (And if you ever need to build a door, you'll know where to start -- or what to look for in a door builder!!!)

Very interesting post regarding your degree and experiences. I can relate. I studied Sociology and Music, but found work as a legal assistant.

The question of whether higher education is valuable as a job preparation, or whether it means something else, is debated here in the US a lot. More and more students are opting for university programs that include skills like using and programming computers — though not taught as vocational programs, they are essential for a lot of the highest paying jobs. It’s the humanities that are really questioned (and being less and less chosen). The debate goes on and on.

I remember learning things at school that I knew I would never need in later life and of course later in life I learned more and different things that I needed to know and sometimes found the little bit I remembered from school helped with understanding some of the new things I had to learn through my working years.
I like your dinosaur, I am one too. Always love Henry.

Gene, that or we die ;-)

Erika, not all dinosaurs are old!
I think "my" company values experience of all shades! People of "all" countries move here and work together, any religion or no religion, education and knowledge, flexibility are the values.
To that, and hugs

____

Jeanie, I always was self-taght, especially after Ii got my degree.
OMG. Dessecting frogs is not a The Simpsons-joke?!!!! Help. I could never do that.
I created houses - on paper and as models, so a door would not be a problem. The problem is supervising. Ii failed with our bathroom.
I iwas at home and sould´ve stood behing the worker but that is not my "thing". He did it wrong and now we have two ugly holes in the wall.
Glad I shower with my glasses off!

____

gigi, crazy, isn´t it. Where life throws us...

____

Lavender Dreamer, a dino, too, LOL Hugs!

____

Bill, you summed it up!

____

Jo, I think the dino looks like a 6 year old went creative... I had no time and went for the easiest way, hugs and thank you x

____

GreenComotion, thank you - the your congrats come a bit late, I got the diploma in 1999 ;-)

____

Mae, we have huge problems with that, also.
Nobody want to go ointo a care-job. Badly payed, not much time. 3-5 minutes per patient I "learned" in one docu (I cannot believe this is true), many are from Poland and hardly speak German.
The doctor that" cared" for Ingo I had to search for 30 minutes. He spoke two German words, could not explain. No English, No French... I was helpless (these days you have apps for that but back then no AI)..
Sad it´s the same everywhere....

_____

River, to dinosaurs. I really have little things from school I need in real life.
I know that in Australia you are allowed to do home-schooling (a friend in Perth did this for some time) - if I had kids and it was allowed I´d do that, too!
And then they would tell me: I never needed that stuff, "LOL".
Life changes too fast. You can only teach how to learn....
Henry says thank you....

That really is amazing, Iris! Good for you! Right now there are so many good jobs in my area, and they are actively looking for people. Where were those jobs back when we could have worked??? Oh well. I got a degree, then a Masters, because without those I would have been lucky to work for the bare minimum wage. Funny how things go.
