Kids Today!

Kids today... they drink, gamble, hang around in dark, narrow lanes... they take pics with Kalle, or, as you call Braunschweig mathematician and physicist Carl Friedrich Gauß!

Can you imagine how my heart jumped for joy seeing this?
There is hope!!!

(See Kalle to the left)

(On bike to the right, Kalle is left)

I am officially old, noticing this with pride... and I love it!

Now, a  mathematician, huh?
Henry 🩁 picks up the game!

Here´s (sadly a very little) hint:

Yes, a very old shot!

Addendum! Somehow I guessed "people" know Gauß or Gauss, but reckon I live behind my own lille rock!

Gauss - the link above  is in English gives much more away, here just a short introduction:.

He is considered "the greatest mathematician since antiquity" which is interesting, as his mother was illiterate, he came from a poor family. When he "was barely three years old he corrected a math error his father made; and when he was seven, he confidently solved an arithmetic series problem (commonly said to be 1 + 2 + 3 + ... + 98 + 99 + 100) faster than anyone else in his class of 100 students." If interested you can read more here.

Maybe you also know the Gaussian filter.

Yes, it was good to see!

I don't even know who Gaub is and hope I got the spelling correct.

...my friend, there is always hope. Well I hope that there is!

Gauss? I'm a mathematician and a statistician. Gauss is responsible for the normal curve which led to the area under the curve which led to calculus. He was also responsible for polynomials and polygons. You can't study math, statistics, geometry, or physics and NOT know who he is. I'm glad you showed his statue, though.

River, no, it´s Gauss - the link is in English. He is considered "the greatest mathematician since antiquity" which is interesting, as his mother was illiterate, he came from a poor family. "was barely three years old he corrected a math error his father made; and that when he was seven, he confidently solved an arithmetic series problem (commonly said to be 1 + 2 + 3 + ... + 98 + 99 + 100) faster than anyone else in his class of 100 students." - I´ll add that to the post 😀

Tom, there is!___

Elizabeth, blogger drives me nuts! I added an explanation! 😁
I thought you might like to see him and "kids" being interested!

Thanks, Iris. To me, he is best known for his distribution of a normal curve. Apparently you and I are outliers (those who are on the very edge of a normal distribution). A Black Swan is an Outlier. In case you aren't familiar with Black Swans in mathematics:

this post will explain.

Thank you, I´ll have a look, but I´m not really good in math! But Ingoo is!

Great to see that all is not lost yet. 😊

Re your query on my post, yes it is from the pre covid era.

Iris Flavia said...

magiceye, yrs, it was nice to see indeed!
Ah, thanks, usually you wrote it´s from the archives, so I was wondering, feeling a tad hopeful.

Every generation has gifted men and women who seem to be from another world in their natural understanding of how things should be.. your Gauss was one of them ✨

Iris Flavia said...

Yes, Grace, genius for sure! 🧬

That makes me happy, too! They aren't all bad, are they!

Iris Flavia said...

No, not at all, not in The City of Science anyway! 💡

My daughter majored in math and is chair of the math department at her high school. She may know who Gauss was. I certainly didn't until now.

Gauss really was a remarkable character. In a sense, it took another 100 years for the rest of the mathematicians of the world to catch up with the cryptic statements in his notebooks, which were very original but hard for others (even experts) to grasp. And as Elizabeth says, his statistical observations continue to be highly relevant to modern events.

be well... mae at maefood.blogspot.com

Iris Flavia said...

gigi, I bet your daughter does know 😀

____

Mae, yes, he truly was a genius and we have heaps of landmarks honoring him here in town.

That's something I didnt know, always encouraging to see the younger ones learning new information and appreciating what we see.

I never heard of him but he certainly knew his math. Nice statue of him and thanks for the link. He didn't want his sons to go in to mathmatics because he thought they might bring down his name and tarnish his reputation. He thought they would never know as much about math as he did. What an ego even back then. Nice to see the young ones learning about history.
Have a nice evening, Iris.

Iris Flavia said...

Amy, yes, it made me smile big!

____

Bill, he must´ve had a seventh sense, LOL!!!
An nice evening to you - I´m watching a movie with sheep, btw!

I have never heard of him and I studied math, statistics, and physics. He must have been a child genius. Thanks for the info on him.

William Kendall said...

Admittedly I had never heard of him.

Iris Flavia said...

RedPat, actually he was a genius in his adult life, we still profit from his work.

____

William, oh. I really was wrong then...

I was always pretty good at math, but yet I never really got it. Doing it and getting it are 2 different things I think. I wonder what the students needed the photo for?

I never consider my math skill top notch, but I only balance a check once.

Erika, pride, I guess 😁
We have lots of Chinese students here and having a pic with that man, studying in the city where he was born, went to school.. makes them proud and maybe it´s the prospect of getting as famous?

____

Dora, me, too, but nice to see kids going in this direction.
