Back the in the 70´s murals were unknown (in Germany).
We do have a bubble-machine on the balcony, too :-)

I couldn´t believe my eyes!
You know... I am German, my parents didn´t speak English, but in grade 7 I got the best English teacher you can possibly find.
Ingo is 8 years older than me and says there even was a mural on him at my school (it was gone when I attended).
His name was Peter May, he was from Great Britain. Is - Pretty sure he still roams around spreading joy in my old home-town!
First time we met he in German said these are the last words in German, English it is from now on. Don´t know a word - describe. We had Rock Music instead of boring train station scenes etc, so... fun times!
When I was 14 I was allowed to go to Great Britain in a school project and thanks to Peter May I straight went into a book store (in Germany, in small towns you got but German books).
The first book I bought!!!
I bought it again, for my Big Niece (thank you, amazon) - she hates English lessons (reckon she has a teacher that sucks, as I had at first, also).
Ingo read it and said it´s too advanced, so I keep it for a while, but what a joy to see it at the kindy!!!
I loved this book.
Yes. I was already 14 years of age, but still a beginner in the language and I re-read it now, too, and was in love again.
Wiki says: "...enjoyable to adults as well as children" - so....
Auntie got a hit (hopefully) wiki also states "In 2000, Publishers Weekly listed the book as the best-selling children's paperback of all time."
If this will not make Big Niece love this language and understand she can conquer the world with it... then... that would be sad. Hope she gets a chance to learn Spanish, too (I sadly did not).
Sami, this sure was a great find, bringing back memories (also of the awful food we got at the place we stayed at back then, oh, my.... I surely lost some kilos, LOL).

I hate French because I hated the teacher. Maybe you can help Big Niece with her English and make it fun for her? The murals are really fabulous.

River, my French-teacher was... hated.
So much the pupils refused and in the end the director came up with a lottery-idea. Both French-teacher´s names were on notes and each pupil had to take one.
I got the "nice" one.
Went to my friend, she got the "bad" one.
I asked her to trade cause I preferred the "bad" one, he was VERY strict, but he taught us well!
Years and years later he came to ´my parent´s shop and asked how I´m doing.
Boy, I´m a nerd, huh?
I still can speak a bit French. Thanks to him!
I never read Charlotte's Web - even though I must be destined to as that's my name. TIme to hit the library :) I hope your niece will come to love that book, and in that way love the language - it worked with me.

I read Charlottes Web as a child.
I do remember the day we drove to that kindy near my workplace. I drive past every day and love that cute mural. It must be a joy for the kids too :)
I hope your niece gets to learn and love the English language, it's an essential language and known around the world. But learning another language is always good.

That's a very colourful mural, perfect for children. Is it the norm in Germany for everyone or most people to speak English? I use to work with 4 German backpackers, they were the nicest young men, very polite and they were fluent in English.
I love Charlotte's Web. I remember how much I cried when Charlotte died. I was heartbroken.

Amy, in theory, yes - I started getting English lessons from grade 5 on, my Niece already grade 3. But those who loose interest, like my Brother, or not fluent. LOL, even my boss always let me check her English e-mails. And with google translate, bad as it is, I think even more Germans will "forget" English. The problem is also that we get everything translated to German. In Nordic countries they get the original and can have subtitles.

A terrific mural, Iris. And like you, I adored Charlotte's web and I can't wait till my guys are old enough to read it themselves or for me to have them long enough to read the whole thing to them. It's the best. E.B. White's Stuart Little is another favorite of mine, about a little mouse.
