Last week I read another sad news. A shop I never knew even existed (make some advertising?), the California in Braunschweig´s Quarter Magni, has to close. After 30 years.
Is it the same in your place? Local, small shops closing, one after the other and huge chains come instead, the locals, well, their bad luck.
Since years I was looking for good quality jeans and so I went.
I told the lady that my Brother suffers the same. People come into his shop, have their eyes mesured (amongst other he´s an Optometrist), march out and order online at a big chain.
She did a great job, I now have 4 quality jeans!
It was half price and I even got a pair of men´s jeans - for very small men, that is.
Mostly she only had "skinny jeans" left and who wants those?!
They will have to be shortened to my size, let´s see if Ingo gets out his sewing machine (he said so!) or if I have to go somewhere else.
And here´s another thing! She had offered the service for adjusting trousers: €6.
Chains (I had it done 2 years ago): €10. Crazy, no?
She advised me to wash the jeans before cutting/sewing and that, no!
These days people don´t go to job interviews with such stupid dress pants anymore, a good fitting jeans is OK!
When you feel stupid in your clothes, I think, you act a tad more stupid, too, right, me at least...
It´s a shame.
I have to get that old to learn there are jeans-shops where people actually really help you!
She brought me trousers, gave her opinion...
Meanwhile the people who take over for some other business were already making notes. So sad.
The lady had the business for 17 years (hmmm, magic number, huh, just like me!) and it takes her 1 hour one way to get there, so she said, "awww, well, it´s enough anyways".
At least no regrets too big.
Her friend is a goldsmith (like my Brother) and she told the same stories from her my Brother tells me, too.
A shame.
I always try to buy local.
(In case of my Brother, though, it would be lying. I never may pay, nor is Ingo allowed to. We get it all for free, "darn", proud little Brother! The only glasses I have that were paid for was screen-glasses my then-boss payed!).
Well, clothes sure is another thing. I hardly buy any.
I have heaps of Perth- and Braunschweig-stuff and that´s about it.
If money grew on the balcony I´d have more to share, but sadly it somehow does not happen....

OK, I wanted the box. But the cookies are yummy, not too sweet, I had one already!

Ja, schade daß die guten Geschäfte verschwinden und werden ersetzt mit Läden die Luxus und/oder Schrott zum hohen Preis verkaufen. Passiert hier täglich. Leider! Ein Löwen Spekulatius hab ich nocht nicht gesehen! Dir einen schön Tag, GlG, Valerie
Schrott ist das richtige Wort! Ich habe mich in der Mittagspause vor einem Personalgespräch bekleckert und hatte keine andere Wahl als Primark. Zwei Mal Waschmaschine und dann Tonne, es war Schrott!
Den Löwen-Spekulatius gibt es nur hier, es ist wirklich unser Löwe, Heinrich! Yes. Also to see why. Getting adivce there and then order online... I wonder how the business world will change.
...I was just going through my jeans to take those with holes to an Amish lady for mending. Old jeans are like old friends.
Oh that's a shame Iris, but it sounds like the owner is ready for it. I think a good pair of denims can take you anywhere, you can dress them up or make them casual to. Henry on a biscuit, yum 😉
We've lost a lot of local businesses, mostly due to online shopping. And they are all kinds -- book stores have taken a huge hit here (and we're a college town). A lighting store that had been in business for decades just closed -- partly because of the age of the owners but no one wanted to buy it. Lamps and such are less expensive at big box stores. I hate seeing that happen.
Tom, yes, good jeans are! My last were €60 and turned into bags in no time. Washed them at 95C / 203F - nothing happened - "cheapies!

Here also in United States there a lot brick and mortar stores are stuggling.

Many local businesses here have closed, but so have some of the larger chain stores. The convenience of shopping online and having it delivered to your door seems to be taking over.
Yes, Lois, you are sadly right. It´s a big pity... what are people to do?
The curse of the internet. Sad, but true that independent shops are being or have been closed due to big name chains coming in. A little town where I used to work voted in a big name chain. As a result, a pharmacy, a grocery store, and a "5 and dime" store all went out of business. Later, the industry where I worked closed and most of the town had been employed there. When the industry closed, so did the chain store. Now people have to drive 30 miles minimum to buy groceries and have their prescriptions filled. I bet that town council got booed out of town, too!

Horrible, 30+ miles?! What are people without a car, people with a disabilty, and be it "just" a broken leg, weak elderlies are supposed to do, take the bus and carry the stuff home that way?
"5 and dime" - when I was young I always wondered whre Sting bought his guitar, those shops were not known in Germany! (And there was no internet to find out). Now we have shops ccalled KIK or TEDI where you get stuff for €1...
It's not easy these days if you are in retail …
I always do my best to support our smaller local shops.
