Whilst in the bloggosphere everyone showed respect to the veterans on November 11th it certainly must be Germany starting carnival.
Big party, drinks, fun, senselessness.
I was astonished to find these a while down the road:
Addendum! I kinda took for granted everybody knows about those stones, but maybe not! They are Stolpersteine (English link), "... 'stumbling stone', metaphorically a 'stumbling block') is a sett-size, 10 by 10 centimetres (3.9 in × 3.9 in) concrete cube bearing a brass plate inscribed with the name and life dates of victims of Nazi extermination or persecution." (Wikipedia)
There is some respect to the Jewish people after all, even if the person used roses.

Yes, not all Germans were bad. Reckon most had but a chance. You follow, or your family is in danger.
Luckily mine was not - my Father´s Father was the only watchmaker in town, hence no soldier, and my Mum´s side of the family is not German.
But how can they choose this day to start carnival?
Here it is officially celebrated in ??? February, I think.
I had one nice thing to celebrate, though!

Whilst getting my cam out of my coat´s pocket... PLONG. (Very silently).
A man called, "excuse me, you lost a sweet!", and before I knew it that elderly man really bent down and handed me my sweet (as in hot licorice, brrr, sweets ;-)!!!)
I smiled all the way home, or, did I?
Likely he was a veteran´s kid.
He knows the value of a sweet treat.
I certainly thanked him, but maybe I should´ve done more? He was with his wife, though, so reckon a smile to them was enough?
I know it has - apart from the first pic not much to do with Tom´s "Signs 2", but I felt the urge to share.
As maybe you´ve seen in Monday´s post I have some poppies right here.

Oh, Valerie! Das ist... traurig, das muss sehr weh tun, die Familie als Stolperstein zu finden.
Mein Bruder studierte in Köln und ist an Karneval immer geflohen ;-) Hier haben wir Norddeutschlands größten Karnevalsumzug (ist sogar im Fernsehen NDR3). Ich hab´s mir einmal in echt angesehen. So 10 Minuten, dann hatte ich genug! Bierkästen in Einkaufswagen.... naja, nur dann kann man es wohl "lustig" finden...

I also thought Carnival was meant to be in February. Not very thoughtful to have Carnival start on a such an historical date.

Yes, the official one here is in February - it´s on TV, even (if you want to see Braunschweig again it´s NDR3). But, eeek. Guess you need to be drunk to enjoy it. I once visited. After 10 minutes I just had to leave, LOL...
In India its carnival time all the time due to our multi religious and multi cultural populace!
Had seen these stumbling blocks while visiting Berlin and thought it was a great way to respect the innocent victims.
In a multi cultural place this is OK, but especially Germany should show some respect.

I'm not familiar with the stumbling blocks so thank you for explaining them. It's a beautiful tribute to those who were killed in the Holocaust. And you are right about Germany and the carnival and the respect. To wait a few days doesn't seem like it would hurt the carnival but would be more respectful to the families of survivors.
Yes, Jeanie, though it might be the tradition is 100 years old with the start of carnival. I have no idea and admit I have not enough interest to do research.
Even if it´s an old tradiotion... respect is more important, especially in an internation world we are now in...

Remembrance Day always makes me sad Iris, the sad fact is that there will always be a sad going on somewhere in the world.. it's as if all the young people who died in the war died for nothing xox
I remember Valerie showing some in her village and they were of her distant relatives, too. Good that some remembered, while others found a way to celebrate.
Here in the states, Trump thanked the military before a BIG parade. Many in the military refused to participate in the parade because of how he treats our military and people we are trying to protect around the world. Some people marched in the parade, though. It gave them an excuse to put on their uniforms and attend a "party" of their peers.
