What about you, did you live in such big hostels back then?
When I studied I was lucky enough to be able to do flat-sharing. Much better, I think.
I remember one flat, we were four people (with Ingo on the weekends five).
We cooked together, had great meals, a big kitchen, there was wine and beer... laughter and lots of talking, discussions, and also quarrels...
"Young people" going away from their parent´s home, figuring life out :-)
I guess that´s easier like this than in a hostel.
I visited one. Tiny rooms, anonymous. "Fully" equipped, nearly no place for personal stuff.
We made us homes, those hardly can be ones.
How is (or rather was) it like in your place?

When I graduated from high school, I moved to a new city and lived alone. In fact, I've almost always lived alone, although I've allowed people to stay with me for a month or so while they were getting back on their feet. The many years I went to school, including grad school, I owned my own home. I've just never believed in renting. Sadly, I can't relate to what we call student housing, dorms, or sharing an apartment. Sounds like it was fun times for you.
Having a house must be wonderful!
My parents had their own house and after studying and having the job "safe" I rented a one room apartment, later we moved together, rented, now we own, but it´s still just a condo with sometimes loud neighbours above.
We don´t have enough money to have a house in the city...
You must have a big heart to let people stay till they get on their feet again! Very good, you save some souls!

Oh, thank you Margarethe! We travelled Tuscany. It was beautiful! We are old and stayed in hotels, though. I remember Sydney, a hostel, ohhh, well, I climbed into my Hubby´s (then boyfriend´s) bed, though, I didn´t feel safe ;-)
At school we went on jouurneys and stayed in hostels.
Back then (in th 80´s) the food was "horrible" in Germany!
...there are hostels here, but they aren't as common as in Europe!
Hostels I´m really not a fan of!
The student ones you rent for 4+ years, for your time to study.
Interesting ... I think of hostels as places for travelers on a budget (usually college student age) to stay at instead of a hotel or Inn. the way you are describing this one sounds more like what we would refer to as “student housing”, where they’d stay for their whole time at University. ... our kids, some of them lived like that when they were students. . Us, we married very young and lived in apartments like any adults ...and bought our first home before we were 25. Now, we are back to an apartment (but a nicer one than back then) so that we can travel. We have a second tiny home in Florida for the Winter. (But now we are very old ;))

Wish we were that rich! But what is being rich. Living in a place like Florida, travelling, big WOW. That must be like really beautiful...

The first hostel here that comes to mind is set up in a former prison downtown.

I have never stayed in a hostel Iris and it's too late now so an experience that sounds like it has the possibility of being fun is gone.. although I guess I could still give it a go.. but no maybe not 😁 As you know there is always some sort of construction going on here in your second home town xox
We have hostels and guesthouses. Camping has just picked up in the last decade or so.
Most of the constrution here is usual bigger home. People from west coast sell home for big money and build here and live off the rest.
