I was at the check-out, second in queue.
First one an elderly man, maybe like my neighbour, wife in nursing home, not able to visit her, thanks to Corinna?
He comes there every day, I learned whilst waiting.
The check-out girl, in her early 20´s, I suppose, welcomed him cheerily and said, "hey, you again, we become friends now, huh, my name is Nicole :-)"
They chatted a little, maybe the only contact he has.
My parents were the same.
They took their time to chat with people who seemed lonely, no matter if they bought something or did not.
Mostly it was broken glasses or broken hearing aid they came in for.
They were always welcomed by my parents.
To my despair!
Mum to me: "You need to go shopping, we need butter, `whatever` and... oh, welcome Mrs X!" - and to me: "Wait till I´m done, there is more on the shopping list!"
MUM! Write it down once, don´t let me stand there 30 minutes+!!!
Nope, I.Had.To.Wait!
Yet, - especially with our neighbour now, I understand.
So - the mask again helped me being more relaxed - I addressed the check-out-girl, "Nicole, that was very nice of you!".
She, "only" being behind a screen, so I could see her face, gave me the biggest smile and we shortly chatted, she even addressed me with the casual "du", not the formal "Sie".
Crazy.
Some people freak out and others get super understanding, super friendly.
Let´s share a lille love, shall we?
Being there for each other has many ways, right?
At least there was some rain.
I went outside, enjoyed it, no brolly, I wanted to feel it.

Our check out people wear name tags so everyone knows our name. It's helpful if a checkout person is rude or something the customer can fill out a form to say who it was and what they did or said, then the checkout person is called into the office and spoken to by the boss. Too bad if a customer is rude, we just have to still be as nice as we can.
It's nice when you can get to be friends with them.

River, lucky you! Our Check out guys don´t. One we call "fatty". His hair is .... ewww...oily, fatty, and his body is, also, he seems to not care and he is mean to us cutomers - I talked with neighbours, who thought the same.
His cash out is mostly empty, only "newbies" go there!

This is a deeply inspiring post, Iris. Too bad you are depressed. It doesn't show it in your impressive post today. I have found the world has gotten a little nicer from where I am since the lockdown. However, I am NO WHERE near any protestors, so I guess I'm lucky, too.
The people at the grocery store my dad went were his communication lifeline in his later years. He would go and chat and they would spend as much time with him as they could. He knew them by name and so did they know him. It makes all the difference, especially to the lonely.
I hope things will be OK with the job.
There should always be time to chat with people even for just 30 seconds!
People always chat with the check people here. You never know what is going on in their life so maybe a litle chat cheers you up but also cheers someone else too. Got to share the love and spread it one person at a time.

I find it depends on the shop I visit.
Not sure how the nursing home are there. But the ones except Medicaid is usual way under staff.
My husband always chats to people and goes back after we have eaten food etc to thank that staff who prepared it. Whenever we go back he is always warmly welcomed as a result, they remember him.
Always nicer to be kind than not 💙 Try not to get down Iris, I know it's hard but you are trying your best that's all you can do.. enjoy that walking in the rain 💜💜
