This was Wednesday morning on the way to Hanover. The Autobahn was closed due to smoothness, so we hit the country roads, K and I.
After Banksy (posts to come) we hit Zoo Hanover.
Yes. T said we´re crazy to go to the zoo in this weather and it kinda started like a déjà vu when I went to Perth zoo and the signs were right: "Animals can hide in the shade when too hot" - goes the same for Hanover when too cold.
No people, no animals!
Doesn´t like snow much, it seems. We saw but the sign...
These are huge, there were three of them.
And for sure I was glad there was this very thick glass between us - though from the distance they looked friendly.
Yes, I know, zoo has two sides of the medal...
How about you, yay or nay?
I think, as sad it is they´re not roaming free - if they were born in a zoo they don´t know what they miss, they are cared for, toys and play included and people are more aware, more interested and more willing to protect them.
Either way, this was "freezing our butts off part I"!

This is Baby Henry. The zoo-staff put out a permanent warm blanket and hence the family was out in the frickin´ cold.
After he/she smiled at us we saw this glare.
Are they "happy", are they "OK"?

I have mixed feeling about zoos, like you said if they were born in captivity they do not miss being wild and free. Some species are endangered now, so it is nice some will live on the zoo. I haven't been to a zoo in years. They can be sad places.
You had snow on the ground! It is raining here today and no snow for us yet.
RedPat, Zoo Hanover is one of the better ones. The staff is trained, space is "plenty" (just ask my feet... outch).

I haven't been to a zoo in decades. It's sad to see the animals, they have no freedom.
A bit crazy but a lot of fun. The last Zoo I went to was in WA.DC just before covid hit. It was one of the best zoos I have been too. Glad you had a good time.

My favourite at the Auckland Zoo is the kiwi house, when I was little it always had an air of mystery about it.
I have a kiwi-tattoo... as close as I came by... Made by a Kiwi, of course, and for free :-)
I love well-run and responsible zoos, such as the San Diego Wild Animal Park where the animals have huge open spaces to enjoy. (Though obviously the lions and their prey are separated, not like in the wild). I also like the National Zoo in Washington, DC. One day I hope to go back to the St.Louis Zoo which was famous in the distant past.

I worry about zoo animals that are so far away from their natural environment and wonder how they cope, like the north African ostrich for instance, in Africa he would never see snow nor feel that cold, so is he happy where he is now? I hope they keep the enclosure warm enough, but the heating bills must be enormous.
Same here in our hot country, we had Polar bears and they seemed happy enough, but keeping them cool enough would have cost a lot. I don't know if we still have them.
Those aren't the critters I would have expected!
The hippos are formidable animals.
