Henry looks delicious! Now I know why my Dad loved his "bread board" so much. I don't remember us ever having Abenbrot like that though, mum followed the Australian way with cooked dinners, always mashed potatoes and vegetables with some kind of meat, usually lamb chops or slices from the Sunday roast leg of lamb (I hate lamb) or left over roast chicken from a Sunday when we didn't have lamb. Very occasionally we would have beef, but more often sausages. Always with gravy. We grew up Australian.
I do like the herrings in tomato sauce though and have them here in my cupboard right now, next to the cans of tuna. And I love my rye bread too, with cheese or with anything else, but not with peanut butter, that needs white bread. And the little pickles! I have those too.
That should be Abendbrot with a "d" I think?

You had sausages?! Australian sausages?! We tried them, too. They were maybe "bad"? They were so wobbly... you know how much I hate to waste food, but... Ingo threw them away. And we never bought sausages again... LOL. Those herrings... I only need to see them and nearly gag. I like the pickles and cheese. If or when we meet again let us stick to that ;-)
No, it really is Brot. Abendbrot. With a harsh "t" - we are Germans.... we are harsh... not, also with t. Thank you for the laugh! Ingo gave my PC a very simple password written wrong, now I always have to think how to write if I want to write it correct - don´t mix in with that ;-)
You´re very welcome Nicole! We really do have boards but ours are plastic. Ingo used to have round, wooden ones for years.
The sausages have to be cooked, we buy them raw and cook them usually frying, sometimes grilled on the barbecue, then we eat them, with gravy on the dinner plate with vegetables, or if cooked outside on the barbecue we just fold the sausage into a slice of bread with fried onions and a bit of tomato sauce.
I just watched the German Breakfast video, the foods are much the same as the Abendbrot, but I see no vegetables at all in either video. I wouldn't expect vegetables at breakfast, but for other meals there should be? Perhaps the midday meal is where the vegetables happen?
We put them on the BBQ - wobbly! Ours are... different. At my family we had tomatoes, radish, gherkin, pickles for Abendbrot... Maybe that lady did not take all over to her new place.... Lunch was always cooked, as I do, too - Ingo started breakfast-cooking - weird.
