38-Year-Old-Letter

Bro is still working on his / our parents´ house and found this letter our Dad wrote to me in January 1977.
Believe it or not, as kid I was a tad too skinny (said the doc), so they sent me away to island Sylt to gain some weight.
Which did not happen, since I made friends with a big boy and we exchanged our food – yikes for thick butter!

On one hand this is such a cute gesture of my Dad.
Obviously a response to a letter I “wrote” to them.

I am promised lollies in my Schultüte and the letter ends with they miss and kiss me.

He even added a drawing himself, picturing my clapping Granma, Mum with said Schultüte and Dad with the pic I sent them.
Wow, I think it´s a tad too arty considering the amount of his hair! ;-)

There must´ve been snow on the island I cannot remember this, but he added a snowman as well, saying he wishes the snow comes back to my hometown with me, cause my skis and him wait for me.

He really saw the world very much different than I, how can that be?

I remember the horrible ride with my yellow plastic skis, it was getting dark already, I was tucked between my Dad´s skis and I thought, if he falls down the hill, I fall with him and no one will find us.
I was four years old! And obviously more reasonable than he was.
When we arrived safely the car was stuck in snow, the last other driver helped us out – I had to get off, cause I was “too heavy”, thought he leaves me in the woods, cried all the way home and got punished for crying.
I was not looking forward to do that once again! And we didn´t, either.

I was also crying when I had to leave in the “big city” Hannover with all the kids I did not know.
His interpretation in the letter: The kids in kindy will adore me for being on vacation without my parents.
Um…. guilt?

Weird how differently he saw the world, huh?

I´m not a parent, I have no idea but I find it odd, even still today.

I really have no idea what to think about this letter. Am I thankful? Is it cute? Guess you have to have been a parent to judge, so I simply accept it and thank Bro for sending it around.

9 months later Bro was born btw. Go figure.... too thin! ;-)

Nice that your Dad would write a letter and draw some pictures too.

Just last night my husband was talking about when he was young he was considered too thin, and had to have some injections to open his appetite.
As a teenager I was also considered too thin by my Granny. When my sister and I left South Africa and stayed with our Gran in Portugal for about 1 year, I managed to put on about 10kgs!! Thin no more!! My parents were horrified when they saw me, once they moved to Portugal too.

Niece is thin, too, but I reckon these days parents see the kid is active, healthy and hence all is ok.

Maybe it was the generation who went through war, who suffered hunger and were over-protective in this corner?

Or my parents just needed a time-out from me! ;-)
