I didn't know both wars were started by a German. And I certainly don't hate the country or the people because of it, I just hate the individual persons that start the wars and force others to do the bombing and killing.
And now I have forgotten everything else I was going to say.

Yes, for a long time we had a kind of aversion to Germans here. Here in the Netherlands. I noticed that as a child. We definitely didn't go to Germany. But I had a wonderful teacher German and because of him we discovered the other side of Germany. I think that aversion started to diminish in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I went to Germany for the first time in 1969. To Berlin.
Nowadays the only problem is that 'we' always lose the football matches against Germany.
Thank you for being this honest! I really... well. I had to say I am sorry for what we did (to the Jewish people) when I was 14... good that my generation is "free" from that guilt - though in Perth 2015 I was again accused of the Holocaust. Me. My parents were kids, my Grandparents not involved.

I guess we all grew up think Germany was the enemy, but I know millions of Germans didn't even fully understand what was going on, and certainly didn't want it. It is the leaders who have to shoulder the blame, and hopefully we have all moved on now.

I was born after the war (in the Netherlands) and my parents, who had lived through the war and were treated barbarically, certainly didn't have a good word for Germany. But when I was about 9 or ten, my parents befriended a German family of their own age because it wasn't a healthy attitude. I stayed with that family (on my own) in Oberhausen as only girl among 4 boys. The first German words I learnt were 'Briketten holen!' because he shouted that at the boys all the time.
Apart from that occasion and driving through on a few occasions, I have not visited Germany. It is a beautiful country. Last year when I traveled with my friend in the campervan to Italy, I asked if we could travel through Germany.
I also had a great German teacher and through him I read many German books. Literature of course for school, but I also got into other books that were popular in those days. (Konsalik, I think I read every one of his books!)My language skills used to be good but I've forgotten most of the grammer and now I'm only fluent in what we call coal mine German, i.e. German with bad grammer and bad words.lol.

Glad your parents could forgive! Mine were little kids and only paternal side German and not involved.
My Dad had books from Konsalik - I read none, though, it is fiction, I suppose, not my thing.
Grammar does not matter, guess how my French is after all those years of no use ;-)

I've been to Germany, many years ago now and found the people we met very friendly, it's the few individuals in any country that are the problem and I know if it wasn't for Putin we would not hate Russia so much either. Well you know I LOVE that first picture. No, I am not afraid of Germany or Germans. In fact it is one place I would love to visit. My neighbor, Elke, is from Germany and is a lovely person. She teaches me a few words of German. Thank you for your support and joining FFO.
