Since I was 4 years old I wanted a cat - got a German Shepherd instead, it did not go well and I went on Ingo´s nerves oh so often that I want a cat or better two (so they can play with each other).
Thanks to my friend fK I am done (for now).
They had two cats.
One got sick and in desperation jumped off the balcony. From 3rd floor, her children were the sad, helpless witnesses. She was dead instantly.
The remaining cat, a sweet old man, pukes at least once a day somewhere into the apartment.
Also it´s a great drama when they want to go on holiday as he hates leaving home.
Ingo and I are away to Perth on a regular basis for 6 weeks in a row.

And she is right, I guess.
It would NOT be fair to leave for 6 weeks and ask neighbors to take care, the cat(s) would feel cheated, abandoned....
I had a mouse, a clever Jaculus - she even knew what my ears are! She got real old (nearly 3 years) and I was devastated when she passed.
There is a The Simpsons-episode where adult Marge is still sad about the loss of her hamster.
I´ll stop asking Ingo to get a cat, I got it now.

Do you travel a lot, if so, do you have pets and if so... how do you handle them?

Since hubby and I like traveling and we feel it is not right to have a pet at this time. I have never owned a cat only dogs. I am sure they get upset when they are left alone. Charly is a cute kitty. Hi Tom, yes, you can put up water bottles upside down for plants... worked for a three weeks holiday. More will make six weeks!

Whenever we went away for an extended period, we had a house sitter to take care of our dogs, we had 3 and our 4 cats. Now we have none which I am used to. I just admire other people's pets and take their photos. :)

We have but a condo. Small. And Germany does not have the concept of a house sitter yet - and no idea if I had the confidence?
But I am with on the pictures taking!
I miss having pets but we are on the go a lot and I really don't like an animal inside my house. If I had a fenced in yard, I would like to have a dog but then traveling becomes an issue. I'll just enjoy the wildlife I see and other people walking their dogs!

I have always liked cats but I am a dog person. We have good neighbors who take care of cats, dogs, rabbits and chickens for us if we are away for more than a day.
Right now we have just one cat, Clyde, who is 15 and a very agile gentleman for his age.
Since you asked, for me, pets are a necessity. I've had cats and dogs. Cats are much easier. They can go a couple of days if you leave, and you just have someone stop by to change the litter, be sure there is food and water, and maybe give them some love. You can't leave a dog. Right now we get my daughter to dog sit and stay at the house. We have used a kennel before, and sometimes we even take them with us. And cats are always great, even when they are older. But all pets are a commitment. But of course, you fall in love with them and that commitment isn't such a bad thing. My animals have always been part of the family. hugs-Erika
I don't travel at all because I have a cat also because I have no money, but if I didn't have to buy cat food and the clay litter for her toilet ray and vet fees when she gets her claws clipped and the flea treatment for her allergic dermatitis, then probably I could save and travel at least a little bit. Also there is the trouble with cat hair absolutely EVERYWHERE in the house, ALL the time. I wonder sometimes how cats can lose so much hair and not be completely bald by the end of the week. My Lola is 15 next month, which is 76 in cat years, so she is older than me now but the vet says she is very healthy and not at all overweight, like some cats you see on the internet, so fat they can barely walk, so she probably won't die for many years yet. "no-one's" cat lived to be almost 21 which is about 100 in cat years.
Why would anyone let a cat out on a third floor balcony without some type of barrier to keep them from jumping or falling off? Also it's not normal for an old cat to puke every day. What does their veterinarian say?
If you travel very often, then any pet would probably not be good. We've always had more than one cat, and paid a person we trusted to come over twice a day to feed them, change the water bowls, clean cat pans, and play with them for a short period of time. We also called once in a while to make sure everything was okay. She had our veterinarian's phone number and address, just in case. The cats never missed us. Just one cat probably would.
Our pets are family, so yes, one's passing away is the same as a human's passing away. We mourn for how ever long it takes, but we never forget them. I love your play on thoughts with the hand creme. Sometimes that's the best choice, but I'm so glad I have always had the real deal. Hope you are having a lovely weekend. Take care.

Erika, that is the main problem: You love them!
And when they get unwell... it is hard, so hard.
Our dog got cancer. Despite we didn´t go along well... it was hurting to see her like that. When my mouse passed... it was... I have a friend... she stayed home instead of visiting us because her cat was ill - I speak of Perth-Braunschweig.
A comittment that can be hurtful. The cat died. So... I am a person to weak for that. Please share pics - that makes me happy, hugs

It is never the cat´s fault if too fat... or any animal. But some humans, owwww. Ingo on a plane sat beside a man so "big".... ewww.
I need to lookk for that (German) book. A comedian, whose cat was 21 and jumpy like a teeny!
So, yes. A mouse is a comittment for 3 years max, a cat... longer than a child! (I left at age 17).
I will not nag Ingo anymore...

Yvonne, the cats were used to teh balcony from being little on.
This one saw no other way to end the pain. It was cancer.
The old man... the vet has no idea. The cat is very thin despite he gets double food!!! My frien´s wife works from home and feeds him. When my frind comes home, he begs and she feeds hi again!

Thank you for telling me off, too. I would feel bad on travels very likely, leaving a loved pet at home alone (even if I am not missed - huh, that sounds harsh!).

I guess I did tell you off. Sorry about that. I have lots of photos on my blog posts of all the cats I have had since blogging. and some of earlier times. I think the bottom line is to just read from reliable sources on the upkeep and the social behavior of cats, and make your own decision. I think you have done that, so no more to be said.
