I met a "new" blogger, Elephant´s Child, she´s from Canberra.
You see, some people here really do think Sydney is the main capital of Australia. It´s not.
It´s Canberra and it´s pronounced by locals "Can-bra", and some get mad at you, if you pronounce it wrong.
By golly, by now, after having been told off big I belong to that group a bit, LOL.
It "hurts" to hear people say - as I did - Can-berra 😂
1995 we visited and they not only have arty water-"falls", but also...

And it´s all so....
Yes, it´s like Wolfsburg, a planned city, unlike Braunschweig, which my T calls "Tetris-City", cause he always gets lost (me, also, at times, even Ingo!).
Once I wanted to take another route home. Saw the arcades and thought, yupp, all good. Next.... train station. HOW??? And I wore a Braunschweig-T-Shirt..... That road makes a curve, so gently you cannot feel it. I was on foot. Ingo on the same route in the car (another time). He was surprised as well, LOL.
Canberra, as we got to know it was structured very, very clearly.
Reckon these days it looks much, much different.
It feels like only yesterday we were there - yet ... it´s some whopping 26 years!
How can time fly by so fast?!
The museum was awesome - I have no pics, sadly.
You could learn a lot there.

I have lived in Australia since 1953 and I have never been to Canberra. I don't travel much, but one day I may get there.
Make sure to contact Elephant´s Child before you do, she might give you great tips. The museum back then was science-based, no idea how it is now.
Also... take a jacket... ;-)

I've never been to Canberra, only Brisbane.
I have never been to Canberra, but would love to go there some day. I lived in Germany (Salzgitter) for a year, and I too was fooled by thet curving street in Braunschweig. Thanks for reminding me. Oh ravelling ... sigh.
And Oh, why do you have these "Find all fire hydrants ... I always have to try at least 5 times. More sigh.
Amy, haha. Was it Brisbane, I think! We needed to extend our visa and there were Asians before us. They spoke near to no English and the lady working there with them was FURIOUS.
Next in row was me. That was 1999.
I nearly didn´t dare...
She was very nice to me.
That´s why encourage my Niece to like learning English.

That´s probably why you see his Popo (butt) when you enter Burgplatz from Ringerbrunnen!
The Fire hydrants.. oh, boy, what?! Now I will do try and see them (never heard of that!).
The first time I visited Australia I spent most of my time in and around Canberra. It's a great city, with Lake Burley Griffin at the centre, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Like all capitals it suffers from a pestilence of politicians, but that's not evident to a casual visitor, thank goodness!

I've never been to OZ though I have friends/colleagues that are from there. They all helped the Young One with her 3rd grade project of Christmas Around the World when she chose Australia. One friend sent Vegemite even though the teacher told us not to bring it in. I made the teacher try some. She didn't like it. It's a favorite memory of the Young One. 😺😈
I'd like to see that city someday.

Have you ever read Bill Bryson's book In A Sunburnt Country. It is a tongue and cheek book of some travels in Australia, and he talks about pronouncing Can-bra. As well as other things. It is really funny. But funny with love for the country. Your post reminded me of this book today. Happy weekend Iris. Hugs-Erika

Living in Australia sounds like such an adventure. I looked into what it would take to move there once upon a time. Not an easy process.
I'm guilty of never being to Canberra also Iris, close but not actually there! Aimee's been a few times, one of her best friends works for the government there 🎈
