My friend and later boss P and I cooked - well, I could not cook back then - she said, "HOW?!" She is 5 years younger than me, LOL. No I could not cook... but I helped.
Back-then-teamleader T (another T) was invited, rang the bell, P opened the door and there he stood.
In socks.
In winter.
In socks!!!!
"Where are your shoes?!!!", P yelled.
T: "Well, beside your door, of course!"
Of course, yah. What else. A Wessie (West-German) sure understands at once... not.
Ours...
"Your shoes are beside the door?!!! What??? Why???"
My T rang the bell ten years later at my door.
"Should I put my shoes out front?"
OK, by then I knew... In former GDR you took off your shoes because there was - especially in winter - so much dirt from the coals with which they heated the houses.
The wall fell finally and luckily 1998 - and they still take their shoes off!
(Or tell me, the third T - teamleader), they´re shaved perfectly "down there". Why have men the need to tell me this? This is normal these days, please keep that to yourself, LOL! Sorry for sharing 🤣)

All my Ts are from East Germany and I loved them all dearly. I even - and Ingo joined me - went to soccer for shaved T!! I hate soccer (as does Ingo).

The Green Arrow we got from East Germany. It´s allowing car-drivers to turn right even on red signal when no pedestrian or cyclist is there (dangerous these days with the e-bikes!).
And words like Broiler, Soljanka (yum) - Germany is small - can you believe we were separated so long.
That Russians, Americans, British and French tried to fight about who gets what from darn, mean Germany?
My paternal Grandmother ran into the cellar in fear and panic and got butter and gherkins to a black American soldier who just wanted to ask for the way (he spoke no German, she no English).

The German flag is not to be showed, actually, we still have the "war-guilt" - for soccer or special positive occasions it´s OK, though and my T´s sure are a positive sign.
OH! One MORE positive sign! A surprise-parcel from Ireland is on the way, thank you, Bill! (Can take weeks and months, though, thank you Corinna!)

I like your pedestrian crossing lights. Do the lights also have the countdown of death? Here, when you get to the middle of the crosswalk the lhand or walking man changes to a countdown telling you how many seconds you have until death runs you over! 😺
Most people take their shoes off here when coming into someone's home. Maybe because of winter muck & mess so we do it all year.
It's interesting to know about the coal. Of course, the Japanese do that all the time -- they have a bunch of slippers by the door for inside the house. I suppose it keeps the floors much cleaner!
In Alaska it is common to take off your shoes and leave them in the arctic entryway. There still was another door to open to get inside the house. Shari just made some jalapeno rolls, very yummy. Have a great evening.
ha ha private comments like those are what we call TMI - too much information, I just laugh if anyone says things like that.
I remember when I was very young we took off our shoes and just inside the door were our house slippers that we put on and then we carried our shoes through the house to the back porch where we cleaned and polished them ready for the next day. I wonder if anyone still polishes their shoes?

About the shoes -- we've been taught to do that -- all the time. It's about respecting the host's place/not carrying the dirt indoors. (But that's kind of BC (before covid19), I guess, now that we're thinking about everything in terms of germs. It's nice to leave the shoe-germs outside. :D)
