This is a brolly from Japan, given to me likely in the year 1979.
From a man who after some long fights became free as a bird...
Today he would turn 85.
He had to leave thanks to cancer in August 2002. Never saw his Son getting married, never met his Grandchildren.
He is not forgotten.
I will write a WhatsApp to Bro and he will bring flowers to the grave.
Dad was in Japan in I think 1979 cause he and Mum´d sold so many SEIKO-watches he got the journey as pressie. The journey was for both of them but they split it cause one had the urge to stay with the business.
He was also an optometrist, gold smith and hearing care professional, it´s not all about time... though he also not only sold watches, he was a watch-maker, too, as my Mum was.
And he brought pressies for all of us:

Oh, did I HATE that fondue. Fat over an open flame, it was a pain each time!
Dad looks maybe a tad pis#ed cause he had to be the "chef" not only for my Brother but also for me... I did not dare touch that hot thing there!
And was always ready to run in case of fire.

Cancer is a terrible disease. There are too many terrible diseases. I wish we could all just grow very old and peacefully die in our sleep, but that's not nature, is it? I am loving that umbrella and that photo of all of you in your kimonas. I wanted to buy one in Japan, but they are expensive. I love that photo of you. I hope you have good thoughts of your Dad today. hugs-Erika

It's hard with cancer takes our loved one. Both my sister and brother are gone because of it. I do love seeing the photos and all the memories they hold. Hugs, my dear friend.

A very pretty umbrella and wonderful family photo and memories of your dad. I believe we carry those that went before us. They are in our hearts, the way we talk, gesture, look. I look in the mirror and see Ma looking back at me.
That umbrella is so beautiful. I loved the vintage photos -- do you like fondue now? I love it and the hot pots. Lovely memories, Iris.
CJ, yes, I look at my hands and see my Dad´s. He also gave me his eye-color.
I´m also sadly as hectical as he was.

Jeanie, no I still hate fondue. On our small kitchen table that would be highly dangerous, too! And Ingo gets sick from hot fat likely, we won´t try this. I think my Brother took the gear. May he be happy with that! :-)
Nice memories. Our parents live in our hearts forever. Never had fondue so I don't have an opinion.
Love your Japanese parasol - it is so pretty. Always sad to remember our loved ones who have gone, but what wonderful memories they leave us with. That is what we have to treasure :) xx

I remember fondue parties here in the 70s, I never went to one and didn't have a fondue pot either, but people here would melt cheese in their pots and guests would dip vegetables or bread, others melted chocolate and guests would dip fruit or bread or pastries.
A cheese fondue... I sadly never had one... It´s typical Swiss.
We had a raclette, little pans you fill with cheese and whatever you want, put it under a grill and on top, well you make a mini bbq.
Yum, but you´re full very soon. And Ingo hates it.
