Does Emil Have To Leave Me?

Look what I found!!!! I couldn´t believe my eyes!
On the way to get Ingo´s bread I turned around our corner and ... WOW!
At first I thought I call my T, as I am not "allowed" to carry chairs, according to him.

Funny side-story, when we met at IKEA for brekkie we went shopping afterwards - we both needed chairs.
Ingo knew about the plan and suggested, practical as he is, to take a rope with me for easier carrying - it´s a 5km-walk each way. I mean, it was but a 3kg kitchen-folding chair, plus, I explained to T, if I get tired, I can sit  down, right?
(Once I bought a bag and was asked if I need a bag for that, and I´m not even kidding!! )
No way, he insisted on driving me home.

This baby was a tad more heavy, so I was happy I found "him" (in German chairs are male) right around the corner!

So... after 20+ years Emil (named that way by IKEA, not me)...

Emil ... will welcome Ingo when we watch something on my PC together - I will not throw him out!
He helped me reach things high up (and that he will keep doing as he is steady), helped me renovate even!
Ingo was often saying I need a new chair, Emil is uncomphy for always sitting there, so... I certainly listen to my husband, like a wife does, right (when she wants to) 😉

At first Ingo said "Treasure" needs to go!  My Brother called me rag-collector and T asked:

"... you gonna repair the rip or do you consider that 'shabby chic'? 🤣"
Which... got me thinking.

Any suggestions?

Boy, WHO throws such a super-comphy, mega-cool original 70´s chair out?!

My dream chairs are long gone, my Bro had to bring them to the dumpster as our Dad was so "clever" to put these babies in the attic 😭. All that is left is this pic:

Dad is holding the book with me, no idea why, the glasses were fake and I think I only pretended I can "read" (and obviously I´m a folding chair person ever since, LOL - the kitchen chair is made of wood and has no arm-rests, I´m not weird)... But these chairs in the background, awwwww 🧡🧡🧡.
Treasure has (fake?) broken leather, our old ones had fabric.

I think I declare Treasure is shabby chick and that´s about it.

Henry 🦁 ...  you found him by the stove, right? And leaning against the heating is his sibling.
And that eye... Ingo´s. Taken at Freo.
P.S. Maybe I should explain: Over the years I had three team leaders all called Thomas, all from former GDR, and this one is my friend now, we WhatApp every day.

You find the most unusual things on the street. i would have to recover the seat, though. A bit of foam, a bit of good fabric (not leather, which sticks to you in the summer if you are wearing shorts) and a hot glue gun. I bet Sami would have ideas for how to save it, too.

I´m sooo lucky huh???
Hm. Ingo and I tried to retrieve the seat.... It "sticks". No idea how to get it off!
A bit of foam??? Where from, how, by golly, I have never done anything but sewing that cover for Ingo´s cushion!

You are VERY right about leather and naked summer legs. Huhhhh.
Sami has to come over, I reckon!
Hahaha.... Corinna.

Yes, that was MY LUCKY DAY, I nearly danced for joy! My childhood right there to take home! Emil maybe was a tad jealous or afraid, if chairs can be that way, but now they must´ve made friends ;-)

Wow!!!!! Such a great find. Deserved, because your eyes are open!

Iris Flavia said...

Bertiebo I´m soooo glad others did not see this beauty! Even Ingo makes friends, if slowly, LOL.

Emil looks very sturdy and Treasure (Schatzi?) is such a great find. You're so cut reading your book in your little chair. Enjoy your day!

Oh you were lucky it was just around the corner Iris, it was meant to be yours! Now I will come back to see what ideas Sami has, she is brilliant with restoring furniture 💛

Iris Flavia said...

LOL, without the "i", but yes, "Schatz", he´s perfect (well apart from the rip), happy surfing/reading, a nice day to you!

Grace, yes, imagine I went earlier or later "he" might´ve been gone!!! Happy dance! 💃💃💃

What a fabulous find. Free stuff is always good stuff!

What a great find. It has wonderful design lines and I'm glad it's comfy. That's the best!

Two ideas: One, for Emil -- get a chair pad. It could be a big throw pillow or IKEA has tie-on chair pads that are pretty comfortable for not much money.

For your new one -- two options -- A smaller cushion over the rip or...
Take a fabric you like and cut a square or two (or something from a pattern -- a flower or whatever) and adhere it to the spot. (You could almost patch it with several pieces and it would look less patched and more designed.)

If the seat is fabric, you can use an iron on adhesive (like a "Wonder Under," which we can get here, spray it on the fabric and iron it on. If it is smooth like a leather/leather-like plastic, you can adhere it with a strong glue. You should probably make sure edges are under so they don't fray.

Great find!

Rip in the driver seat! I heart this... almost 25 years ago. But did you see the plain seat when Mr. Spock got up ?

Iris Flavia said...

Tom, yessss...

____

Erika, this I would´ve paid up to €200 for!!!

____

Jeanie, thank you, but Emil sure feels... well you are right, Ingo´s butt (Popo) is a tad bigger, Emil might appreciate help!

Good idea to use patches, but how to I find out what material this is?
"Wonder Under" I´ve never heard of! Germany is always behind, sadly! Glue? I feel like I live in the 1920´s... Thank you for your suggestions!

___

Ingo, that´s something just the two of us understand ;-)

My husband would always find the coolest throw aways and bring them home.
is the orange a seperate pillow on the chair or is it attached?

magiceye said...

Yes one does start getting sentimentally attached to chairs!

Iris Flavia said...

Kathy, attached!!! Glued on maybe???
How can one throw away this chair??? Well, they gave it as free give-away... at least. Post to come :-)

_____

magiceye, come back tomorrow, OK? LOL.

Wow that is a nice find. I love the photo of you as a child. You look so grown up with your crossed legs. Have a great Friday.

A good find.

Iris Flavia said...

Nicole, LOL, I think that was sitting 70´ style? I´m still in love with that chair, can´t believe how one could give this away!!

William, one of my BEST!

That is a real treasure! I would have run all the way home with it!

What a great find. I would have taken it home too. Duck tape will cover that small rip, no problem and it will last for years. It's a seat with character and everything takes a lick every now and then. :) A good evening to, Iris!

gigi-hawaii said...

Yes. I like the white chair with the ripped cushion. Can't you put tape over the rip? It looks so comfortable.

Iris Flavia said...

RedPat I did!!! I was soooo happy!

____

Bill, glad I was there in time then!
Have you read Ingo´s comment - we fixed our driver´s seat in Australia like that. Bur this one, ohhh, too precious for that! Have a good evening, too, Bill :-)

____

gigi, I´m not sure... if I found tape in that color: YES!

Mae Travels said...

I’m with Bill: duck tape! That is what covers the rips in my desk chair. One of the major necessities of life is duck tape.

You go to a shoe repair shop or upholsterer and buy a scrap of leather or fake leather in the same colour, or a contrast colour for interest, insert it carefully under the edges of the tear then glue it down with whatever the upholsterer suggests.
Let it set before sitting so you don't get stuck!
Or just cover the tear with duct tape.

Amypie said...

I'm loving that chair - those are hard to come by, very retro!

At Home In New Zealand said...

Haha, a good wife ALWAYS listens to her husband - when she wants to! :))

Iris Flavia said...

Mae, duck or duct, now I´m confused...
We used "Panzerband" from German Army to seal a rip in a driver´s seat in Australia :-)

____

River, great idea!!!! I´ll do that as soon as we can go to such places again! UNDER the edges, I can do that!!! Thank you! And I´ll take care my "Popo" won´t get stuck ;-)

____

Amy, I´d payed 150+ euro for that!

____

Margaret... We got it, eh! LOL

Sami said...

What a great find Iris, I would have brought it home too. I'm sure it's worth a bit of money too as retro stuff is becoming fashionable.
The lamp is beautiful and so is the orange phone :)

Sami, yes to all !!
