This is Australian Geographic´s Nellie, she came from a Perth friend a couple of years ago "straight to the hospital"..
The tsunami 2005, we both did donate money to help (Ingo and I - Nellie was not "born" yet ;-)...).
What did happen with the money?
We get stupid stuff via snail mail again and again.
Letters, cheap plastic bags - how were they produced and from which money?
All the money went to snail mail and ads.
Sad. I will not help such "instituitons" no more.
The loooooong TV ads we get to give money for this and that, showing sick children, captured, mal-nutritioned animals...
How much money do you need to get these ads on? At "prime time", too.
No.
I did get this bracelet.
I do hope a tree gets planted in return by RegrowAustralia.
Why would I care about animals on the other side of the world?
It´s not only because they are cute, because they need trees.
It´s personal, too.
2013 friends took Ingo and I to Caversham Wildlife Park... and "made" us touch a koala.
(Wee! Ingo still wears this t-shirt! Good quality, huh?)
Why "made"?
Back then every 4 hours one poor fella was picked out of a tree and people lined up to touch, "cuddle", not always the gentle way and this one was turning away in stress already.
But I "obeyed" and I am thankful.
Never ever have I touched anything that soft, yet strong, you cannot describe it, you really have to gently stroke the fur, it is amazing.
2015 Grace took us to Wendy Binks, it was the year of 100 years Gallipoli and many wore a poppy in legacy, as does this koala by Paul Moro who sells via Wendy.
(Icky day today, come better light I show you what Grace did to us/me! She turned me into an addict of the art of those two!)
Later P got me a sachet of poppy-seeds I still have here, I love poppies very much.
And here we have it all combined :-)

A lot of these charities squander money on stupid stuff, so I usually only give to local charities - like the dog shelter round the corner here. Then I know the're using it properly. have a great day, Valerie
A Koala tattoo! That's amazing. There is a place here in South Australia, a wildlife park where people can hold a Koala for a short time. There is a certain time and a limit on how many people during that time and they make sure the koala is well fed and calm before the holding begins. I have a photo of me holding one.

I gave up donating money to charities as there were too many stories about wastage and bad management - now I just help those I have direct contact with.
Yes, local and direct is best, but this one I consider honest... I think just because some are bad not all are... I hope!
I have learned the only charity I give to is the American Red Cross. They do so much and they don't squander their money with ads. My friend Sally gives to many charities, all worthwhile, but they are constantly asking for more money.

Nellie is so cute. It is sad that people find it comforting to make money at the expense of the unfortunate.
They will plant trees, I´m positive about that.
Very hard to know which charities to support. I try to look at what percentage of the donated funds goes to the charity (vs. "administrative" costs). Have a nice weekend!
It is difficult to find a good charity-we need to research them out as best we can. I have been giving to Yellowstone Forever-the non profit for Yellowstone Park for several years now and this paSt year I felt something was different and wrong, I just found out that they now have very bad money management and the people in charge need to go. I dropped all my funding now. they have stopped educating as well-say they can't afford it-one of the primary reasons for the charity. off my rant now haha. enjoy your weekend hugs

Kathy, yes, it´s sad when things like that happen. I was very frustrated, too Didn´t have that much money back then and what did they do with it - not helping the people whose houses were blown away... That´s no rant, it´s the (sad) truth! Hugs, to a good weekend!
Nice tat, I like it. We donated some money to a Donkey Sanctuary located not far from us. The money goes to feed them, health issues if any one needs it. Also they have a shop where you can purchase items, art cards, etc. and that money also goes to the upkeep of the donkeys. It beats what you say happens when you donate to an agency and they send you gifts. I don't like that either.

I would love to touch a koala! What a fun post. I'm pretty careful with donations, making sure I really know how the money will be spent. I know they had administrative costs but I want to be sure that they aren't excessive. But supporting hings we trust -- that's such a good thing.

I very much enjoyed this post Iris, well, I enjoy each and every post you do! Growing up and traveling more made me a lot more fond of the environment. I am so touched to read that you also are doing you part to share for the environment and I very much agree with your Koala experience. In my case, it was the Whale Sharks. Back in 2016, we went to the island of Cebu and a part of our trip with my friends is the whale shark experience. We snorkeled over to the very very deep sea (I was quite scared but I kind of overcame when I was already there and we saw how huge the whale sharks were, I was super close and one did pass by my back and I was lucky to have a photo with it. I know it was an amazing experience but I do felt very guilty because the whale sharks are sure stressed by the daily visits of travelers just to see them and swim with them. I am quite sad about it but very very grateful to have swam with them (OMG Iris I can;t describe how big they are, probably like a normal sized bus)
