Let´s Fly Away! And Eat With Red!

As you maybe know Braunschweig has a (little) airport - they do research here, I had a further training there (on EHD, Enterprise Help Desk, but, hey, I was there!).

Got a book on it and if you´re interested here is the summary!

(also please read my last words if you read my last post, this is important to me)

1938 "we" hosted Deutschlandflug, a Germany-wide airplane event, the biggest in THE WORLD at the time (p 28).
Also in November that year the TU (Technical University) opened the very first Aviation Learning Center.

They had a restaurant and each guest watching the planes start and land got a voucher for a meal, five beers (!!!!), a schnapps (!!!) and tobacco of 40 cents. (p 40)

Fast forward to 1983 - James Bond´s microhelicopter "Little Nelly" visited for the Flugschau - sadly no pic in the book.... just the sign.
And many, many complaints in general upon the constant noise of regular work hours there...

1987 another festival with 20 000 visitors.

November 21st   Lufthansa named an Airbus A 320-211 "Braunschweig" (p 95).

March 1990 they were the first to install the Microwave landing system

In August that year the airport turned into a missile launch base for experiments, "Albatros 1" was but 1,30m but, hey, an achievement, no? (p 96)

1992 they were quick: Taxi (start-and runway) was getting a new asphalt surface: Width 3,50m and all in one day with five machines they put on 5.500 tons of bitumen! (p 98).
Now??? They take forever for minor repairs...

1993 a Boeing 737 from British Airways "delivered" the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra" - Braunschweig had no stairs! They got one from Hannover and simply put "Braunschweig Airport" over the Hannover sign, LOL (p 100).

Glamor, huh - 1994 Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus von Amsberg arrived with a Cessna-Citiation.
Two months later the SL-Aviation  arrived in a DC-3, a Raisin Bomber from 1944 - the airport was too small, though - nothing bad happened but it was cancelled after that try (p 102).

Let´s fly to the year 2000. Can you believe it. They were on Hannover Expo 2000 with their research airport - as my Mum and I were!!!! And I had no idea (I was not living in Braunschweig yet) - so sad... (p 103).
For that the Jordanian King stopped here, too and went on to give the aerobatic show as "ambassador of peace and friendship".

A glider with a span of 30,9 m took off as the biggest and strongest glider in the world, developed here, called ETA.

A center for aerospace was added, and the German Aerospace Center. For the Airbus A 320 they needed a longer runway just yet again.

The weather station is also right here (p 108).

2006 an Airbus  A 320-232 from Niki Lauder hopped in to become a simulator plane, so when you see a "D-ATRA"... it´s made in Braunschweig (oh, let me be a wee bit proud on what the city I live in achieves). (p 110)

Especially the research airport is important to our city and region.
2000 high-qualified jobs, over 4000 altogether they offer. One of the strongest in Europe.
They developed the Full-Flight-Simulator, the only one world-wide, a Dornier 228, pilots from everywhere come here.
Gyrocopter is another subject they´re at.

And already 1989, btw, they had the first GPS-landing world-wide. (p 120)

Aerodata with all the sub-themes is situated here, too, #1 in flight inspection systems world-wide, "Search and Rescue" etc (p 124).

Good read that was...

And I can join Erika´s Red again, too, see this is what we got in a two-buck shop somewhere in Australia in 1995 (we traveled 6 months) - I always knew my Brother will have kids, but it took too long (2010) and the formerly red was... well, worn, but isn´t this too cute?

In my defense... the plane-spoon was on the table and I had another perspective, I put it down for the pic... And I had a very good horror day (taxes#1 DONE! (for 2021)).
Exhausting!!!!

Henry 🦁

To the future. (How about beaming?)

A P.S. on last post.
I think you cannot imagine what a pain it is to READ.

Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen.... blablabla.... Kolleginnen und Kollegen blablabla.... Kolleginnen und Kollegen... blablabla...
Kollegen... blablabla... Kollegen....

It could be shorter and where suddenly went the Kolleginnen???
And did this give more info???

Is the author too dumb to use copy and paste or is the person simply sick of this nonesense?

When I worked for VW I pushed through a passage like this:
In this portal we use for better reading the male form only and we certainly always include the females.
Boom, ready. We call that USABILITY!
No one ever complained!

Certainly we are polite people - last post was about painful reading, dear Blogger*/*innen - KIDDING!!!!! Let me simply call you blogger-friends, OK?

A Canadian friend tried to find a word for our friendly relationship.
She came up with "friendine"!!! Now that was at least silly fun!

I don´t think men and women (HAHA, let me take "men" first! Really, I grew up with that, "Männer und Frauen"!) will ever be really equal.
Some jobs only very tall, strong women can do and men will never give birth (Arnold Schwarzenegger in Junior lied on you!!!).

But we can be PEOPLE.

And we can grow. I was so disappointed when I braved up in Perth and went to a pub by myself. A guy stood right next to me and the bar-keeper thought (thinking!!!) I "belong" to the guy and addressed him, not me.
I was there first, and the man said so 😀
The bar guy felt a bit bad, too.

Cool airport. I am old enough to remember when the commercial airport was first built near the town we lived in-this was a really big deal-they had a huge celebration. for something fun to do our parents would take us there to watch the airplanes come and go-and they always had nice resturants in them back then too.
Love your drawing! Happy weekend hugs

So, this is a world-wide phenomenon? People really go to watch planes take off and land?!
Funny!
Hope your parents did not have beer and Schnaps with that - kidding. To a happy weekend, enjoy the Bowl for me... hugs

Fun plane post Iris. When I flew home on Spirit airlines they fly airbuses so I was on one. I have probably been on one before because according to the hubby you have airbus and you have boeing planes. I hear a lot about planes since my husband engineers parts of airports like runways and parts of terminals and his dad was an airline mechanic. I'm guessing he knows a lot, because he seems to. Notice I said seems to because I don't really know much about airports at all. Except what he tells me-smile. And people are people-that should always be first. Maybe that's why I mind if a man feels he needs to open a door for me when I can do it myself. I know it's supposed to be polite and all that...I am loving the red plane spoon. I think we had one like that when my daughter was little only it was blue. And thanks for sharing at AJJ. It is always appreciated. And yes. I will have to get a good photo of that last red piece as it is in my journal. I got the other page out and just need to stop by the PO to see what it costs to mail. But maybe I can get into the photo taking mode on both. I haven't forgotten! Have a super weekend Iris. Hugs-Erika

Ha Ha My parents never drank, my father maybe a beer once in awhile when my Mom wasn't looking I don't think watching airplanes at airports is something people do much anymore-back than it was something new--just like toll roads here-that was quite the thing too-faster highways for long distance driving-but one had to pay for them back then Yep I am old haha

...Iris, you assembled a lot of aviation history. Let's fly away.

Erika, ngo is a lot into planes... and who read the book? ;-)
Planes, trams, engineering, it´s all so exciting!
My (male, haha, back to that subject) are always astonished I am an engineer too and love to learn about the details.

Stop making art I want - KIDDING!!! Don´t stop!
Have you seen the parrot in our kitchen? It´s from Tom - he sent it in high quality and I printed it at the shop. Took forever, but worked :-)
So, no worries with snail mail! Hugs

____

Kathy, when your Mom wasn´t looking?! Haha! He certainly smelled the beer!
Yes, tolls for highways. Austria, Switzerland and who knows what other countries have that still!!
This marks you officially as not old ;-)
I just wait for German politicians taking on the "concept"... Am I glad I don´t ned a car!
Happy weekend and hugs

____

Tom, YES to that :-)

____

magiceye, it was a great book indeed.

When they built the 1st modern airport here with stores & restaurants everyone would go there to watch the planes & just hang out. The old airport was not like that all and it seemed so exciting. Times have changed.

Iris Flavia said...

Padre, thank you and did (delete ;-)... and wrote you an e-mail!)
Cheers, dear friend, glad we found a way around blogger´s tantrums!

____

RedPat, yes, I think the restaurant like back than does not exist anymore, but we sure went a couple of times to watch and they had an open door day, and you can get beer (Germans, huh).

Tobacco use to be so cheap, I remember when I first started smoking at age 14 and paying $2.50 for a packet of 20, i quit 12 years ago for good but nwo the prices have gone up to about $38 per packet, it's crazy.

Iris Flavia said...

Haha, Amy, you, too?! Oh, we were fools... I think I quit 2002...

I agree with you about small repairs for anything taking forever now, when in the past things got decided on and built licketty-split! Just get on with the job, get it done, move on to the next one. If they got paid by the job instead of by the hour, things might be different?
Of course you can be proud of what your city has done!

Several of my engineering classes involved airplanes and aircraft, so this was a really interesting and exciting post to read.

Thanks also for the red airplane spoon you drew for us at AJJ using Erika's theme. Loved this post!!

Angela, glad you liked it - to a great weekend! xXx

River, oh, what?! I remember 1999... when we needed 5 weeks to sell our car in Perth we saw raodwork FLIPPING by in a speed it was amazing.
All down "the river" now, too? (German saying gfor down the drain).
Yes, we´re still the city of Science - I think they don´t give that title anymore, but either way... in my heart we will always be.
Though some students are so dumb in real life... it´s scary!

____

Dora, I have no idea, either, it´s a pain with blogger!
I keep on trying!
Ah, no. Afraid of heights. A solid plane is all I can step into!

____

Elizabeth, you´re welcome :-)
Actually Ingo is the aircraft-enthousiast but he didn´t read the book (maybe with this post he done ;-)...)

I am a "dumb" student. I can listen to all the words and read them, but my brain doesn't absorb the knowledge. I remember just enough to pass the test and then it is all gone. I could never do any science or engineering.
