Medgar Evers, 1963 - To LOVE

"'Freedom has never been free...I love my children and I love my wife with all my heart. And I would die, die gladly, if that would make a better life for them.' - Medgar Evers

Medgar Evers was a leader who didn't care for fame or money—the "quiet integrationist" he was called. He wanted to make a difference and improve the lives of others. As his wife described him, he was sensitive "to other human beings; their needs, hopes, joys, and aspirations...Perhaps most important, Medgar was able to turn hate into love."

As a child, Medgar was studious, shy, and "the conscience of his friends." Among the qualities and experiences he took from his parents, it was their outspoken nature, especially regarding their convictions, that Medgar adopted.

At 18, Medgar joined the U.S. Army and fought from 1943 to 1945 during World War II. After the war, he went to college and then started a family. While his family was most important, his work for the NAACP during the Civil Rights Movement in the late 1950s and early 1960s became his calling. As the Field Secretary for the organization in Mississippi, he helped organize boycotts and set up local NAACP chapters.

One of Medgar's struggles throughout these years was living daily with fear. He was afraid for his life because of his position in the movement. As his wife recalled,

"We lived with that fear day in and day out. We learned to deal with the threatening telephone calls. We lived with the cars that circled our home late at night. We lived with the rocks and debris thrown at us. We talked about the possibility of death many times."

Medgar would admit to being afraid but then say, "I can't let that stop me from doing what I must."

These fears, however, were very real. In 1963, a Molotov cocktail was thrown into the carport of his home. Shortly after, someone tried to run Medgar over.

Then, in the early morning of Wednesday, June 12 of that year, when Medgar returned home after a usual long day from work, wearing a T-shirt that read, "Jim Crow Must Go," he was shot in the back as he got out of his car and began walking to the front door. He died about an hour later. He was 37 years old.

The following year, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and then Voting Rights Act of 1965, giving black Americans the rights Medgar had worked so hard for.

It would take 30 years for the man who committed the murder to be found guilty and sent to prison for life."

There you have it.
Color added by me.
37 years old. Hear me cry?

Car Wash

Fellow blogger Spare Parts and Pics has a truly great post here, that got me an earworm and many memories when we traveled Australia´s Outback.

First, let us get rid of the earmworm, OK?

I had no idea this song is from 1976 - my Dad fooled me till my school days. There is but classical music.
Certainly I found out there is more!
Mom had ABBA in the car then, after I was "lost" (I later on Dad´s request learned to play classics on the piano) - and I listened to The Sex Pistols. Never lie to your child!

Anyhows, thank you, bloggy-companion - and please... hop by... wonderful photography always!

Back in then Wanneroo, now called Madeley... washed and ready to be sold.

The best car ever. To Germans they are male.
He was our car to drive through adventures, he was our bedroom and on rainy days in the Outback we had our lunch or dinner in him.
He was our home.
He was our protector. Built 1985. Took us around for 6 months. Best time ever. I sure miss the Outback a lot.

Car wash these days often mean you have a drive through.
I had one company car where I took care - boy, was I scared I do it wrong!!!!
Boss told me he never has a car wash so the next 3 company cars... well... ;-)

For River:

It was wonderful  in Elsey National Park!
It can never be hot enough outside to hop in hot springs!

And here is another short history-lesson.

The Darkest Trends Of The Victorian Era#6

For part #1 with explanation see here.

 "School is over

Back in the good old days, education wasn't exactly a major concern. Children had more important things to do, like earning a living! Who needs to be able to read and write when you can be a little chimney sweep, right? Sure, there were a few fancy church schools that were supposedly "free", but let's face it, most poor families needed every penny they could scrape together.

In the meantime, the rich people sent their snobby offspring to prestigious institutions where they learned fancy things like Latin and Greek. Talk about priorities! Thankfully, someone in government finally woke up from their afternoon tea slumber and decided to make schooling compulsory for all children under the age of 13."

To education, huh!!!!

Be Brave

"Robin Williams as the Denver Bronco's first male cheerleader in 1979" - found on FB.

Why, why the heck did he take his life.
He was kind, funny and everybody thought... happy.
Depression is awful and dangerous.

And, as you see in the pic... he does not cheer, as in smile - maybe that was a very early sign...
And it seems we still have no cure for depression.

Take care of those who look not happy... and... be brave.
And remember all the good he did, the movies and the little gestures like being polite to the people in the street...

The formerly Braunschweig Lions, now "New Yorker Lions" - name change due to the sponsor - have male cheerleaders, but they wear men´s clothes.

Hello May (Save the Best For Last)

This is for Tom´s signs2.

Other... can you believe it´s May???? Here it´s Father´s Day, a public holiday.

And here we go, meet May, ...

All the money goes to the Perth Children´s Hospital.
The firefighters do this in their free time, the photographer takes no money, nor does the printing company.

A sign people care.

And, oh, boy, am I sad my work-e-mail-signature has not "Fire & Safety" cause we lost the Fortescue-project.... Wouldn´t that have been fun. The one who is so darn scared of fire (me)...
But reckon people would´ve asked back  a lot... at least those who know me.

Signs of May now?

"Take one day at a time and you will eventually find your way".

I hope it works out, I got a huge package....

"Today is another beautiful day".

Where is that exactly?

Kalbarrie NP, we´ve been there....

And now the May-story, a lesson:
