Trained To Loose Your Brain

I´m nightblind, it´s dark in the mornings now, it was slightly raining, too, the road was closed due to a new construction site and my old navi was lying useless beside me.
Useless cause I was on the freeway with no chance to stop.

Quite a while ago I had to take the longer tour before, it was still light, I had the navi on cause I knew beforehand I had to take that route.
The first time I got the right exit, the second time the wrong one, they´re really close. The navi led me through, but it was quite a chaotic drive.

And now it was dark, raining (breaking lights!) and I was without navi. Eww.

I did manage absolutely ok.

This morning, I know the construction site will be there a while, I turned the navi on.
For, ya know, just in case.
I clicked “fast, freeway”.

By golly, no idea, what the darn thing “thinks” what the fastest way is, after "leading" me correctly onto the freeway it wanted me to exit all the time! I stuck to my route.

Do you remember how it was like back then?

Here in Germany we had the “Falk”-map. Once unfolded it was a mess.
I still have one for Braunschweig and Wolfsburg in my car.
Last time, about 8 years ago, I stopped at a gas-station to ask for the way, though.

Yet, what did I do, when I was looking for a job in big cities like (I admit) Hannover, Braunschweig, Göttingen & Co fifteen years ago?
I looked the addresses up in the paper-phone-book (yes, we had Internet - but when I was online, Ingo´s Granma couldn´t use the phone, so…), I searched and marked in the map where the target is, wrote main (yet to me unknown) places down on a paper and off I drove, by myself, in the old Opel Diesel I had.

Would I dare to do that these days???
Would you?

Whenever I have to go somewhere I don´t know the route, I program the navi, search google maps, print out the route, all double-safe, yet I fear the day the navi dies (it´s an old one).

Seesh, how stupidly dependent on technology have I become.

And thank you, dear brain, for being there in "emergency" :-)

Can you relate or is it just me?

I was looking for an address in D.C. earlier this week and everyone I consulted was looking it up on their smartphones when all I really needed was to see a good ol' honest-to-goodness map. :-)

I totally relate Iris. I prefer to get out the map book, plan the trip and keep it safely open just incase I have to pull over and double check. But I hate the first time to somewhere new. Sounds like you were very brave in this instance :)

I still have one of those Braunschweig maps, they were a mess when opened up!
I have a map book in the car but also use the navegator, which being 8 years old hasn't got a lot of the new suburbs...
Sometimes because road directions have changed it will tell me to turn a certain way that I know I can't turn, so we have a "fight".

So, I´m not alone :-)
Sami, you still have a Braunschweig-map? Well Braunschweig isn´t growing that fast, maybe you could even still use it!
Yes, we fight, too, the navi and I...
