Friend(iene) - And It Happened That Way
It was so funny.
It was Cuba, 2010. We sat at a small table and had as much food as we could eat (read: not an overload, as most (keep in mind... Cubans were/are poor) - and we NEVER do this anyways, nor do we complain there is no Leberwurst in Jamaica (yes, I overheard this!)).
It was an "all inclusive" hotel in Varadero.
Suddenly a young woman popped up and asked if we like to join her and her Mum.
They, too, only had as much as they could eat, they were from Ontario, Canada.
We all clicked, the "Mum", V, is Ingo´s age (yes!!!) and we had a blast!
The Daughter, T, (who by now has two beautiful, cute kids!!!), she invented the word friendiene for me after I explained in German you have "Freund" for male and "Freundin" for female.
Do I spare you this?
No :-)
About every 10 minutes he had to check if everything was still in place in the front...
Oh, by golly, that is 8 years ago already, how come time runs so fast???
We had three weeks together, it was fun.
We´re still "friends" on FB, but we never saw each other again, sadly.
I´ll never forget, too, how, when we said good bye for good at brekkie, the cook left his station to hug me!
Right in the middle of the room, too!
Where everybody walks by. LOL.
All... most?... just took his food without even looking at him (and yes, I had an eye on this! - I ALWAYS greeted him, said thank you - I´m old, I was taught to be polite and treat people as people. Doesn´t seem to be the rule anymore...) - no one ever tipped him but us.
You do know I hate being a POI and he made me (people stopped "munching" their heaps down to watch, ohhhhh, my!), but it was sweet, too, because it was just a big "thanks".
He sure is in my heart.
As my friendienes are :-)
Aaand! My therapist said you can see I´m off meds!
Aaaand we went to Schadt´s for a Currywurst Pommes (I can EAT!!!!), paid, said good-bye and suddenly were both grabbed in the back (boy I can jump, LOL)!
Was the boss, A. :-)
She hugged us both big :-)
Addendum. "Siegfried" stayed by himself. And this is actually very sad, no?
Maybe he had a big heart, too, maybe he was loving and fun.
But due to his string tanga no one wanted to find out and he never let go of that darn thing AS IN put on another layer...

What a delightful post (especially the last part about feeling well and eating!) One of the best things about traveling is meeting new people and discovering you connect well. I hope you share this post with your Canadian friend -- I think she'd be thrilled that you remembered the occasion so happily.
Yes, I munch away, too, now, LOL.
Well if she sees it on FB, but I do not force people...
Soon we´ll be off to Perth and that will be fun, too :-)
Nice that your appetite has returned Iris. Lovely that you kept in touch with that family you met on your trip.
Oh, yes, Sami, I am thankful I do not have to gag anymore!
Yes, thanks to Internet/FB it´s all possible!
Such a lovely post Iris, thanks
All the best Jan
Thank you, Jan :-)
Oh believe me I've seen many a Siegfried while on holiday Iris, Siegfrans also 😀 So happy to hear you are enjoying eating again, it is one of life's simple pleasures 💜
OMG, Grace, really?! This was the only Siegrfried for us and it was enough to see, too, LOL!
