T STands for EaT And Drink

I am so sorry.
I have to introduce you to a wonderful book, that is available in German only.
It covers 60 years of food over here and has the history of that time as bonus.

Let´s start with Toast Hawaii, - I introduced you to that yummy dish before and it tells about the very first Jamie Oliver here in Germany, Clemens Wilmenrod.
In the 1950´s Germans wanted to have a holiday, but there was no money for that, so the TV-cook came up with that dish.
Pineapple was available and there you went, in your mind, on your tongue, to Hawaii!!!
A mini-holiday, we have this dish often.

The good, ole Currywurst!
Some claim Berlin as origin, others Bochum, here is a song (Bochum!):

Our Volkswagen boss sent this song around to all of us, also us "tiny externals" (cause he considered us all as team) Thursday was Currywurst-Day!!!
And we all went! Every Thursday, that song, a song about Currywurst (lyrics)- it´s Bochum-slang.
The city where the singer, Herbert Grönemeyer comes from.

Memories.

You´re not hungry yet? How about Schnitzel?

Actually an Austrian dish, or maybe Italian, we aren´t sure.
But... it´s YUMMY! And history-wise it´s about May 1st, International Workers' Day.

A wonderful book.
It taught me more about German history than any teacher.
ONE book!

Art-wise, history!

Another 60-90-seconds sketch (This is what it´s all about):

And to qualify for Elizabeth and also to have a Henry here:

Henry certainly loves Brunswick Mum!
Wiki says: "Mum originated in the Late Middle Ages.[1] The composition gave the beer a long shelf life that allowed a wide distribution; Mum became the most important export from Brunswick and, in the early modern period was shipped to places such as India and the Caribbean. The drink is still sold in Brunswick where since autumn 2008, for the first time in about 200 years, it is produced in alcoholic variants."

Taking part in Elizabeth and Bleubeard´s "T Stands For Tuesday".

You are right: I would love that book, but I know only the slightest bit in German. I'm a big fan of food history of that type. Thank you for the small translations!

be well... mae at maefood.blogspot.com

Who cares if the book is only in German. I was enamored by the photos. And there are translators, too. Some of the food sounds interesting, and learning food history is something I need to explore.

I've never heard of Mum, but that may be because I don't drink alcohol. It goes nicely in Henry's mouth at least. Thanks for sharing that incredible book on the history of food and Mum with us for T this Tuesday, dear Iris.

Yes, Mae, the sorry went out to you... it really is a great book and I know most of the dishes and now the history to it also!

Iris Flavia said...

Elizabeth, hmmm. Sadly it´s a real paperbook, how do you translate that?
I just looked it up, I found no kindle-version...
Mum these days is not alcohol no more, it´s more a syrup they add to beer, but also use for cooking.
It´s very thick and sweet!
Thank you for hosting and have a happy T-day!

Enjoy your book, but I'm not a fan of German cooking....especially all of those fatty foods that people love so much. But my daughter liked Toast Hawaii, it was one of the few foods she would eat. Tastes are different! Happy T day, Valerie

Iris Flavia said...

I go for Brokkoli this week :-)
If they have some! Happy T-day to you!

Ella said...

I like the German food more than the Dutch!
But I have found a balance between all the dishes and is ok now! I don't like the fruit / meat combination! Absolutely not!
As Valerie says: Tastes are different!
How's Hathi doing today? Has she calmed down a bit?
A little BIG hug for you! xoxo

Iris Flavia said...

Ella, luckily tastes differ, how boring would our world be otherwise, right! ;-)

No. I lost my contact-person, I think it´s not professional to just have an automatic response announcing you´re on holiday, e-mails will not be answered.
No substitute, just an overall contact on their site.
In case of technical problems I have no contact tomorrow.
Have the names of the men, but no contact, hallelujah, wish me luck, I have my trunk up, though.
Little BIG hugs, xoxo

I first had schnitzel in 1972 and still enjoy it! The toast looks good too :)

I love cheese on toast and pineapple but not together!
We lived in Germany for ten years from 1971 and loved to eat out and have Weinaschnizel Schnizel, sorry hope I've spelt that correctly.that was my favourite, we also love currywurst and buy the Bratwurst here and my husband makes a curry sauce, we used to live near the snellimbiss and would walk down to buy them for supper.
You've made me feel like going out to buy Bratwurst now, ha,ha
Have a Happy T Day

Margaret, Schnitzel and me, same year, LOL!

Jan, oh, I´m so done with Bratwurst, but agree the German one is pretty good.
Sadly too cold for a BBQ now.
And Schnitzel, yummmm...
A happy T-day to you, where did you live in Germany? Iris x

I enjoyed this post-I love books like that too-so fun and thanks for sharing with us today.
Loved your lion with the drink-perfect.
from your comments on my post what works best is the watercolor pencils to use with water-but I am finding some of the color pencils I have are working a little bit with the water too.
Happy T Kathy

What a fun read, Iris. The history of German food was fascinating. I'd never heard of currywurst. The stories behind the recipes are very interesting.

Dear Iris, I can;t just choose one as a favorite on the dishes you shared, I would eat all of them with a smile! But okay that Currywurst look very special! I had a similar giant sausage in Prague last Winter but it has a loot of paprika in it which I loved so much (though I was a bit nervous, you know about my Bangkok 'hot'dogs right?) But turns out it wasn't that spicy at all! Have a great rest of the week Iris!

Iris Flavia said...

:-) Stevenson!
You make me laugh every time!
A Currywurst is mild, no worries. But a Schnitzel sure is more yummy!
You can get it with mushrooms, with... all you can think of, hmmm.
Great, now I´m "hungry"!
A happy week to you :-)

Schnitzel is definitely Austrian, not Italian. My mum used to make it with pork fillets, but I use chicken. I make a whole big batch and freeze them separately wrapped so I can thaw just one at a time for cooking. I had one day before yesterday, the last from the freezer, so now I need to make a new batch.
I've never heard of Currywurst, my dad was a fan of liverwurst, spread on bread, but I hated it.

Such a fun post. Even when in stay at home advisory, you can still travel the world through food. I’d never heard of pineapple toast sounds delightful. Henry looks quite happy with his beverage.. Take care and Happy T Day

But Hubby uses chucken, too.
Liverwurst I like, too! At Coles I even saw "German Leberberwurst" once!

How interesting to have food related to history. Of course it is all interrelated.
I am not a lover of German food. (Too much fatty things) Abd when I stayed in Germany as a child I my palate needed to get used to mint tea and rye bread (which I love now, but as a child I didn't appreciate them). Hubby was in the army in Dortmund and loved all the wurst etc. (He still does)
Wiener schnitzel was a treat when I was young. I remember there was a restaurant in Rotterdam called Wienerwald and we went there to eat wiener schnitzels, that was really special I remember.(My mum doesn't eat chicken)
Happy (belated) T-Day,
Stay safe,
Hugs,
Lisca

Lamb?? I thought traditionally schnitzel was veal.

Iris Flavia said...

Anne, thank you :-)

____

Lisca, yes, bread is something I SO missed in the early days in Australia!!!
Wienerwald, I don´t know if that exists anymore? Please come over, Ingo will make you a good, real Schnitzel - and it´s actually from a calf. So your Mum could enjoy that, too!

___

Jan, thank you :-)

____

River, you are RIGHT! Veal/calf it is!!!
