To Trolley Or Not To Trolley

Is it the same in your place?
Our crappy REWE requires - as everybody - clinical masks, certainly - and you can choose, (free) basket or trolley, trolley is 50 cents, 1 or 2 €, same as at real, but there trolleys only.

Even if you wanna buy but one banana... you need a trolley.
And if you insist your partner comes with you... he/she needs a trolley, too, even if that person needs nothing - and sadly many follow this concept.
You can imagine or have to live the trolley-chaos, right?

EDEKA requires trolleys. For money. No baskets, either.

REWE at the white horse requires trolleys (no baskets) but the input for money is blocked, they´re for free.

dm... Baskets for free, trolley for money.

???? Lala... Corinna and politics!

Let me get  80 years of age I´ll still tell these stories!
Or maybe live them?

Boy-oh-boy. Lala.

Henry 🦁?

He asks for Lady Gaga.
Always make sure you have a €1-coin with you cause some accept only that.

Good night Germany!
Even the weather drives nuts. Storms like in Autumn and still very cold.

Addendum, as there was a misunderstanding I didn´t get - you certainly get the coin back when you return the trolley!
That´s how it all started looong ago. Trolleys were for free, people got their groceries to the car and simply were too lazy to bring it back, so Trolleys all over the parking lot or at nearby houses.
Those who do not allow baskets think customers don´t keep the proper distance with those.
It´s the other way round, Trolleys only makes people have to get very close as there is no space...

We don't pay for shopping trolleys here, I think there would be a huge outrage if there was, riots in the streets etc lol

LOL. When ALDI opened in Perth a friend wrote me an hilarios mail, complaining she had to pack herself, needed a bag and it wassn´t for free.. second mail: "And I had to PAY for the trolley!!"

Here with us you have to put a coin in it, but you get it back when you put the cart back

Iris Flavia said...

Yes, certainly you get it back! LOL

...here at Aldi a trolley (shopping cart as we call it) is 25 cents which you get back. A good deal I think.

Today most pay via card/phone, if you don´t have the coin you cannot go shopping, that´s what goes on my nerves.

Having to take a trolley when you don't have much to buy, neither has your partner makes no sense to me! Just tell people to keep a distance, or limit the number of people in the shop at any one time.
Here we don't put money in the trolleys (except for Aldi of course), but I do see people leaving trolleys far from the shops and of course they have a couple of people rounding up trolleys all around the parking lot. You can even report trolleys you find far from the shopping and you get a reward for it. But I find that those people who can't be bothered returning the trolley in the parking lots are lazy and selfish!

Aldi charges $0.25 here in the states, but no other grocery store charges for their carts. Most places here have several areas in each parking aisle of the parking lot or car park as you say where you leave your carts. Most people put them in these areas. Most people where I live drive to the grocery store/market, so there are few that go missing.

Trolleys as you call them are free in our US stores except for one store that I can't think of the name because they are not in my area. You must pay for a cart (trolley) In my small town the carry baskets have been eliminated because the people take them home. A few years ago we have to pay for the bags groceries are packed in. So people didn't want to pay for the bags and take the baskets home. So now there are two sizes of carts. You don't have to use a cart you can carry everything in your hands to go to check out. You see the homeless with carts filled with their crap and use them as homes too. The turn them upside down and put a tarp over them. It's crazy here with homeless.

Sami, you are funny, just tell the people to keep a distance won´t work ever. And even if there are put 10 people in the store, likely they want the same and stand side by side - I had to step back because of that.
People (here) are dumb.
In Madeley there are often trolleys in front of "our" Caravan Park, too...

____

Elizabeth, people here would not be so disciplined to bring it back. The REWE were the trolleys are free are in a mall, so they cab´t get them outside, there is security...

____

Nicole, I think you mean ALDI. They´re also the only ones (that I know of) who charge in Australia. ALDI is... surprise... a German chain.
I can´t remember when we not had to pay for bags!
Luckily here in Braunschweig we don´t have such a huge problem with the homeless.

Some establishments here do that. It would be more useful, as you get people who are lazy and just leave them anywhere, or street people steal them.

Our carts (trolleys) are free in most places. But it's an odd rule, especially if you need only one thing.

You got to pay to play, people are selfish and don't think of others. You have to pay because people would leave the trolleys everywhere. They are lazy! 8C and sunny right now.

Some places here you must pay and other places they are free.

With just one or two exceptions, our shopping carts are free to use. People are expect to return them to a collection area in the parking lot (some do, some don't). Many carts have a distance detection device, meaning the wheels lock if you get too far from the store.

The only story I know where they charge up to use a cart is Aldi. Everyplace else you can pick, cart, basket or nothing. And trolley's or carts are free. And if you are 2 people, we only need one trolley. It's interesting how every place is different.

Usually we don’t have to rent a carriage (Boston for trolley). If someone is with you, they don’t need a carriage unless they want one, too. After shopping, and unloading your carriage at your car, you are supposed to return the carriage to the carriage return. Lots of people just leave them nearby. The store has some of the workers, usually the young kids, go out and collect all the carriages and return them to the store. I think I have heard that you have to rent the carriage at the Audi store. I’ve never shopped there.

Here some trolleys are free and some are not, depending on where you shop. When I worked at a supermarket it was newly built and the trolleys were free at first, then we got the money ones and for the first week or two there were free tokens that people could use instead of money, after that the tokens were $1 each, because people would lose them and not keep them to re-use, and some people would take a handful from the basket. When they were free, I got a token for myself and I still have it even though I don't need it and I bought the $1 tokens for my kids who all said No thanks we'll just lose them. So I kept those too. They can hang on a keychain, but I just carry one in a pocket always, in case I need one, then I never have to hurriedly search for a coin.

Iris Flavia said...

William, yes, sad some people are lazy and careless...

____

Laurie, exactly. But what use if you don´t keep the distance otherwise...

____

Jeanie, they try to keep "Corinna" under control that way. Or something!

____

Bill, lazy and careless and dumb, they don´t get the distance-thing.C, cloudy...

____

RePat, what do we need rules for, huh?

____

Spare Parts and Pics, wow, never heard of distance detection! Clever.

_____

Erika, the one trolley per person is only due to Corinna. Still it´s dumb!

____

CJ, the one-trolley-per-personn rule is due to keeping distance cause of Corinna. It´s dumb!

____

River, that´s the problem, people take and take and ruin it for everyone!
I have a Henry as token, but I don´t use him - he could get stuck! I had one from a hardware store... and lost it.

The trolleys are free here except as Sami said, not Aldi but as I don't ever shop there it's not an aggravation for me. We take our trolley to the car, unpack and put the trolley in the trolley spot. Most people do but there are people employed to collect them and take them back to store. It is an easy system that mostly works 💜

I know, Grace ;-)
It´s just the Corinna-madness over here, before you could go without!
Hope for normal times...
