...in this post that "TODAY IS NATIONAL FRUITCAKE DAY."
Complaints to Tom, please, about the coming post ๐ - it´s two in a row and both "his fault" - kidding, dear host!
It was 1999, September, I think 23rd. We had just visited Kings Canyon - or have we been more to the West already, either way I needed to refill our car.
Why ever, to Germans cars are male and we called him "Baby", maybe because he was so darn huge. Was I thankful he had these help-thingies to get in!
Either way,it was somewhere in nowhere. I went in to pay, we also needed ice for our Esky and...
Ingo´s Birthday was coming up - what.to.do????
Such gas stations in the Outback have food, of course but all I found was a....
Ingo was waiting, right?
I had the ice in front and walked a bit like the The Hunchback of Notre-Dame because I had the fruitcake behind my back.
MUST´ve looked funny.
To this day Ingo states he didn´t notice.
I was able to put the ice into the Esky and sneak the cake to the side.
It was HORRIBLY sweet (and I bought it as "diet-cake", whatever that is!), I heard Ingo crunching from the sugar on his Birthday!!!!
(I tried just a wee bit, yuck!)
And that was that with cake in Australia!
And as said before, this week is still Christmas here, so:
If you wanna learn what an Esky is, or about a love that came in late and a great song, please scroll down!

Oh yes, the fruitcake. I couldn't imagine that a cake or whatever could be sweeter than this. Only a fool can think so! On one day a saw a pretty nice looking cream-roll. It seems like a soft cream, wrapped in a thin plate of biscuit. After the first bite my blood sugar level rose like a space shuttle. Impossible for me to eat them up. All in all as delicious as the BBQ sausages.
I am SO looking forward to our German horse sausages at the Christmas Market tonight!!!!
Yes. Aussie sausages (very sorry to say) are terrible for Germans!
...today may be fruitcake day, but fruitcake isn't a favorite of mine!
The fruitcake looks yummy!
I'm a fan of fruitcake, and that looks like a good one.
Tom, I don´t like cake in general,m but you gave me a fun memory!

magiceye, pic is from the internet. Back in 1999 we had film-cameras hence no pic from that ;-)

Divers and Sundry, I won´t give it a second try ;-)
Fruitcake it was! Merry Christmas!
I am no fan of fruitcake but a friend gave us a German Stollen for Christmas and it is delicious.
Christine, it was... yuck! ;-)

RedPat, Ingo loves Stollen!
Growing up my family hated fruitcake but my grandmother and I were the only ones who loved it. I still love it today.
I like fruitcake. My dad used to make an excellent fruitcake. Soaked in brandy for weeks. Delicious!
If anyone is here who don"t know what an Esky is, here is my explanation: Most people in the world call it a cooling box, but for Aussies it"s much more. It is like the flux capacitor in a DeLorean. This part is absolute necessary for journeys to the outback.
First: It keeps your beer cool. (If you buy one, there is a printed number of cans you can store in) Second: Keeps your food fresh. Prevent it from bugs, ants, spiders, snakes and other biting, sucking and itching insects. The Aussies call it all just „Pest“.
The best is: In Australia you can buy crushed or block ice at every gas station. (For the first reason)
Bill, someone has to love fruit cake!! It would be sad otherwise!

CJ, I would love to try that! Ingo´s Dad makes... tongue...

Ingo, post on first, maybe one on the latter!
That fruit cake looks like the ones we get here in the US. With the fruit in all the chemicals. Green cherries? What are those?
Fruitcake lover here! I usually make some but didn't do it this year, trying to cut back on holiday sweets. The Esky sounds like something we could use here!
Erika, I have no idea about the green jello.... But it looked pretty much like this internet-pic.

Sue, Ingo had Stollen!
We took both Eskies home to Germany :-)
As they say, it's the thought that counts -- even if it was a sweet fruitcake, it was still thoughtful!
The red and green bits were glace cherries, I don't know how they make them green, but they are soaked in a heavy sugar syrup I think, I like them in fruit cake but can't eat too much at once. Not all fruit cakes are "white" like that one, there are "dark" ones too, with more spices in them, and often used as Christmas cakes or even as wedding cakes.
I have two or three eskys large size and a small one, also a drinks (or water) container. Never use them.
