Wednesday @ Kathy

It´s cold, too cold for the season, so we decided to have kale on the weekend.
Always a warming treat for us "fish-heads".

Open the huge thing, grab with full strength and ....

Then...

Next...

... then

... make sure...

Add butter, meanwhile cook meat with it or in a separate pot, I prefer Kassler, Ingo loves pork belly. Make potatoes et voilá.. .yummy meal.

You certainly cook it for say... two hours, let it cool and reheat it.
It takes forever so you can do something creative in the meantime:

... and eating!
This is for Kathy´s Wednesdays, where we share... food! Who´d ever guessed I can join!
This is fun!

For Tom´s Signs2 have a peek here, if you like.

Henry 🦁 - glued to the stove!

Hello Iris, I have never seen canned kale before, I have seen canned spinach though here in the stores. Sounds like a filling meal-thanks for sharing with us at Food Wednesdays Hugs Kathy

It is filling, Kathy - and yummy. Fresh kale is just too much work and I think this is typical like this for the region.
It has to get frost one time, other it´s no good.

Kassler! I haven't bought that in years. When all the kids were younger and still living at home I would buy it at the Central Market, for sandwiches for school lunches or for weekends. It never lasted very long, the kids all loved it.
The postcard with Western Australia looks a teeny bit exaggerated. I know it is a huge state, but the rest of us aren't that skinny :)

Nice signs.
Kassler - haven't had that since Germany I think!
Never seen canned kale either.

River :-) I really once got a "hateful" look for my WA-t-shirt!
We really just rushed through Adelaide in 1995 - what I remember is the ... tadaaa... railway in the shopping mall. Even adults were allowed, it was up there at Myer.
Kassler on a sandwich, hm. I prefer it warm.

Sami, yes, I think t´s quite German, that meat?
Fresh kale needs frost over here - yours either, too, or it´s a different kind?

Hi Iris! ☺ Nice blog post! I've never had kale before. I see it at the grocery store and always skip over it and I don't know why lol...it looks like spinach, I need to try it! ☺

I have never seen kale in a can. In fact, I am pretty sure I have never bought any kind of vegetable in a can other than tomatoes, and tomatoes are in fact a fruit. We use canned tomatoes to make pasta sauce.

Sorry, Lieber Iris, but kale whether fresh or canned tastes like grass clippings. 😜

Like David, I have never seen kale in a can. But I've gotten my husband to eat it, which is a pure miracle. I've added it to soup, and let's be real, sometimes the best foods take time. Somethings don't even taste right unless you make them and then reheat them. Hope your day is going well. Hugs-Erika

I've had kale but don't like it. I always end up buying spinach instead...

I like "The spoon of love!" That's wonderful. I'm not huge on kale but have enjoyed it chopped super fine in a salad.

I've had spinach in a can many years ago but never seen kale in a can.

Interesting seeing canned kale. I guess it would taste good with meat and onions. Now you have me yearning for Western Australia too. Perth, here I come!

sounds good to me but I would use fresh or frozen kale:) I don't think we have the canned version in the US.

Kale (made of the northern German way) must be a strange dish! I remember the studying community of Iris (with Iris, Anja and me vs. Astrid and Jürgen-->south Germany). Let's make Kale! The Southies didn't even know it, but tasted them really good.
(If I have a good recipe with fresh Kale, I'll make guest-post at Iris.

Interesting recipe and interesting comments here! This made me very curious, so I checked the website of a big supermarket here, and found that there is one brand of canned kale for Americans! Personally, I don't much like kale, so it doesn't really matter to me. I don't use many canned vegetables, just beans and tomatoes.

I have never seen canned kale here either. And I have never bought the fresh but have had it done several ways in restaurants.

Rain, it´s very different to spinach - give it a go (don´t add a fried egg like with spinach, ewww, that will not work!
It´s yummy (to me).

____

David, give it a go? Especially great on cold days!

____

CJ, like seafood or sweets to me ;-)

____

Erika, hm, soup sounds great, too and yes, some foods need a second warm -up! :-) Hugs to you it was a loooong day!

____

Christine, fresh was soooo much efford!

____

Divers and Sundry, LOL, that´s like saying Pizza and Quiche ;-)
They have nothing in common. Would love to cook for you.

____

Jeanie, yes, love that spoon. Hm tried kale as salad, maybe I did it wrong, it was plain hard and awful - and I gave it a good oil-massage!
If you have a recipe... I´m here to try!

____

Nicole, both are good :-) To a great day!

____

Bill, I never saw spinach in a can! LOL!

___

gigi. let´s meet there, WA is open!!!

____

Linda, I never saw it frozen - will look out for that, maybe less work!

____

Ingo, do :-) It was too mcuh work for my liking, though, I´ll do some training whilst you cook ;-)

____

deb, soup sounds great, too - share the recipe, please? Hugs!

____

Mae, maybe give it a go - great for cold days. Also cause you cook it so long and it´s warm in the kitchen.
Oh, yes, beans are canned great, too! And corn.

Sounds like a great recipe for a cold weather day. I didn't know you could get kale in a tin! That would make it so much easier :)

I can't even remember when I had Kassler the last time - decades ago. Kale in a can is kind of odd, don't think I ever saw that in the 40 years I lived in Germany, but then I was never a big fan of it and didn't look for it. I've never really liked canned veggies. Honestly, I had no idea that Braunschweigers count as Fischköpp, I thought you have to live far more North for that, closer to the sea. I stand corrected.

Iris Flavia said...

Margeret, yes, and much less of a mess, too!

____

Carola, Braunschweig is famous for that kale. "They" (I moved here only 20+ years ago) call it even Braunkohl as, when you re-heat it more often is turns brown-ish.

Welll the Southerners called Ingo Fischkopp. Xou are right we are sadly, sadly too far from the ocean. But I spent nearly every summer near Hamburg, so... I count in, too.

Yes, I am running behind. We only get fresh kale here. Seems all the nutrients would be cooked out. Your meal looks good, though.
