Crazy (Waste) Shopping And Two Angels

... for Peanut, our squirrel.  He/she cannot reach it, it seems, it´s still waiting to get picked up (actually it´s a pack of three).

Pic pre-snow and yikes, they are QUICK!

So. Ingo went to buy mustard the other day.
€ 0,69 for a tube of 100ml.

And next he came home with a lille cup of 200ml - ml for €0,39!
If this is not crazy, tell me, what is????  SAME stuff!
(He just wanted to make a point, we´re no mustard-junkies 😂)

He also came home with this!

A "smile" - kinda not.

3 parcels?! Three?! Weigh, mark, add prices, put in ONE.
So much paper and plastic!!!

Same in your place?
Such waste?

We DO have (a ?) shop where you can bring your own containers - waaay more expensive and Ingo read more than one article it´s not really "bio".

They buy the regular stuff, take off plastic etc, put the goods in wooden crates and sell it as expensive "bio".

It´s a shame, anyways.
Why put a cucumber into foil?
You fiddle to get it out and then give it a good wash anyways.

All the plastic and paper we "produce", it´s ridiculous - and that´s just Ingo and I!!!!
What about a family of 4+?

And what now?
(That truck was stuck when I left and still there when I came back 30+ minutes later, poor guy, that!)

Our street is blocked by snow. Will the city get the ... it´s not trash, right (but that we have, also) plastic and paper from our houses? Bins are full to the brim already!

It IS crazy shopping.
They not only cheat you on prices (see mustard), but also on packaging.

They tell you to not drive a car but offer a job 40+ km away. Yah, take the push-bike for that.

I think we live in crazy times.
Politicians have no idea what people´s salary is and what stays after taxes are off, they get an hilarious amount of money and don´t even have to take responsibility for their "actions", at least not here.
Dumb me, why didn´t I become a politician myself?! Oh, yes. I´m too honest.

Sorry, rant over.
But that mustard/package-galore just shocked me.
Same in your place?

Henry 🦁?

Might ease the pain a bit.
("Jägermeister - muss was dran sein" - produced 15 km from our doorstep)

Henry rips off a tomatoe and eats it up, no plastic/paper needed.
OK, maybe he rips off another animal, who knows what he´s doing at night?

To leave you with a smile 😍
Woke up to 12 unread WhatsApp-messages and was like 😨!!!
What happened?!

They had loads of fun in the snow!
Bro let´s me join the fun, even if only like this (Corinna, you!!!).

Your nieces are real snow angels and not devils! LOL
I can also buy Jägermeister in super but I never did! Is it tasty?
I think my husband will have the same grin on his face when I buy something "tasty" too! LOL
Ich hab dich liiiieb mein 🐘!!!

You´ve never met my Nieces, LOL!
Well. Jägermeister is ... "herby", a tad sweet.
We always bring it as pressies as it´s really from around the corner and we have the mini-mini-bottles that you likely only get here?
Haha, this time it really was him buying that galore. It´s stupid, no?
But the outcome was yummy!
Ich hab dich liiiieb mein 🦋!!!

...the snow is beautiful, but it can sure make getting around difficult. If I tried to make a snow angel I might not be able to get up! Take care.

Tom 🤣🤣🤣 Same here!

Cute angels! Love the looks of that food.

Snow angels are a common sight for kids.

Here when we have snowfall warnings, the city puts out no street parking notices online and opens up municipally owned garages for parking. This allows plows to get to work as the snow is falling with streets clear of cars.

gig, it was better when cooked ;-)

____

William - clever! Where do they get the space and where do the cars go that normally park there?

Love the snow angels!

Love your snow angels! Yes, there is way too much plastic here, too. I think some of it (packaging meat for the market) is protective but at the butcher shop -- if you're lucky enough to have one -- it seems wasteful (although I'm not sure if various kinds of meats should be put "together" raw -- I'd need to ask a food safety person on that. But it seems that paper between would be fine.

Just reading your previous post as well, so much snow Iris, you would hardly be able to walk outside.
Packaging is a nightmare wherever you are in the world, we get lots of parcels delivered to the clinic, small things in huge boxes, what a waste! And all the vaccines that come in those styrofoam containers, then they just get thrown out...
It's a shame.

When you buy food in a tube what you are really paying for is the tube, not the food. It’s much more labor and fussing to make and fill the tube. Same goes for mayo or tomato paste in a tube. It’s only worth it if you want to use it that way. That’s kind of an emblem of the challenges of packaging — and almost always, a small amount costs more per unit than a large amount. Such a complex world!

Snow angels are cool to see. As for plastic, we don't buy anything that comes in plastic and when we buy meat, we bring our own containers. It has really cut down our plastic consumption. The first thing we stopped doing was buying milk in those plastic containers and it made a huge difference in our cutting down of plastic too. That was the most common use for us. We started two years ago and I was shocked by how much we cut back.

Snow makes the world look more beautiful, don't you think? I read some previous posts as well, all with snow. I suppose it's only beautiful if you don't have to travel in it.
Yes, tubes are more expensive as you have to pay for the tube, which cost more than a plastic pot.
Plastic wrapping is awful. I live in a village where I can avoid the supermarket if I want. But even here in the supermarkets, everything is wrapped and packed in plastic. I have bought re-usable nylon bags for my fruit and veg. The lady in the veg shop knows I have them and I give them to her to weigh my stuff in so I don't need plastic bags.
The butcher wraps the meat in a sort of wax paper. Each type of meat individually which they have to by law.
Snow angels? I bet they are not always angels. But they look cute.
Have a lovely weekend and
Keep smiling!
Hugs,
Lisca

Yup, we have all that wasted packaging too. It creates so much trash. Like plastic shopping bags too. I guess you don't have good plowing in your city. That's a lot of snow!

Three parcels yes, because each item has its own barcode which must be entered correctly at the checkout so the store can keep track of what is selling and if they need to order more or is something sells only rarely they might decide to not stock it anymore.
The price difference for the mustards has to do with the manufacturing. The tubes need more specialised equipment (machinery) to fill and seal, the jars are simpler so the cost needs to be recovered via the price. I always buy jars instead because I can use the empty jars for other things later. Empty plastic tubes just get thrown away, that's waste and plastic pollution.

RedPat, yes :-)

Jeanie, I think, too, it would be enough to put a piece of paper around each "dangerous" meat...

____

Sami, well, it´s a workout :-)
Driving is a pain, though and dangerous.
Can´t you recycle those styrofoam back to the companies? Seesh, that is really dumb waste!

____

Mae, yes, I understand it´s more expensive due to the process, but not that much!
I also hate... buy cheese and you eat but cheese cause there is SO much! You cannot freeze, Ingo doesn´t like it... What do singles do?

____

Bill, in normal stores you´re not allowed to bring your own containers. Sadly. Otherwise I gladly would! I´m sick and tired of all the waste!
____

Lisca, well, if you don´t have to drive and have time at your hand it´s ok. Though by now I´m actually done - just the weather is not. LOL...
Yes, tubing is more complex but the price-difference is too big, I think. What if you´re single, do you want to eat that stuff every day?! Same with cheese etc, XXL...
A piece of paper should be enough with seperating meat for private use. One paper bag all three codes side by side, not so much waste..
You could do it! We would, huh? Hugs and smiles!

____

Erika, I always have my backpack, but yes, even students buy plastic bags often, and I wonder???? Rich Mums and Dads giving them too much money?!
Well in the town´s defense... our streets here are really narrow, no plower fits in...

____

River, LOL, I do believe you can stick barcodes side by side on ONE bag ;-)
I understand the process of tube versa simple container, but the price-difference is too high - what if you´re single, you simply don´t need these huge amounts (or have a hubby who doesn´t like cheese and are stuck with a package that´s for a family, hi, that´s me!).... But you are right, we do that, too with jars, if the quality is good enough. Which sadly often is not the case and boom... waste.
It could be so easy!!! Bring your own container, have it all monitored, weight the container first, then fill in and get the price. Not a miracle. Some day...

Your nieces look so cute as snow angels Iris 😊 yup wrapping cucumbers in plastic is a mystery to me, I won't buy anything like that for sure!

Iris Flavia said...

Grace, angels for minutes only 😂
Well. Other cucumbers... lot more expensive as in "bio"...

Nice haul from the store. Here in the states they warp things separate for bacteria. Yes, there is tons of waste everywhere. You have a lot of snow. OK, the mustard is 0.69 here that would be 89 cents. I think that is right. LOL

River said...

A single piece of paper to separate the meats is good in theory, but maybe not practical, if juices from one soak through to another there is a risk of cross contamination, one reason why stores always have high liability insurance. So plastic to wrap the meats, but then still a single paper bag with the three barcodes could be used.
