The Ugly Duckling

Me.
And my Nieces?

My nose stayed the way it was as a baby.
You can look up to my brain.
My Brother´s got a bit wider, not taller.

No one in our family - maternal or paternal-side had this.
I at some point suspected my real father was the postie (whom I never saw, he delivered to the little main post-office), but when my Dad´d passed and hence for once had his hands still (me, Queen of fast clicks).. I saw my hands, just bigger.
Also. His green-grey eyes like mine, the solid stomach and hit something, just a bit, a big, blue bruise. He was my... our real Dad.

But the nose(s)?

Kids, esp in puberty .. can be so mean.

They called me socket, pig´s snot and German Shepherd.
Even when I was allowed to go to "disco" and drink beer they still teased me.

Two years ago they wanted to see my ID when I wanted to buy a refreshing beer along with salad, tomatoes, cheese´n-stuff. I was 48!!!

And I talk of beer, not the heavy stuff! That you can buy once you´re 18!
Beer and Sparkling wine you need to be 16.
Schnapps & Co 18.

I will always be the Ugly Duckling, but you know something?

I DO NOT CARE!!!!!

I found friends who like me!
I hope my Nieces, who turn after their Dad and hence me, will, too!

Boys in puberty can be mean .. you-know-whats.

I never turned into a beauty.
But I mostly live a happy (ugly duckling) life.

Define BEAUTY.

Define quality of life!

I can do... soooooooooo much!
Work, write, sketch, walk, do sport, read, I have (most of) my hearing, sight.... what else do you need???

And maybe beauty sometimes is but inside.

So I join Elle today, even if it is no fairy tale with "Ugly Duckling".

Also.. can you believe... as darn small my nose is, and hence close to my face - it gets icy cold. In the heated living room.
As my hands. In school they sent me to the nurse for that!
In physics-class we got thermometers and in my hand the temp went down, in two tries.

Maybe I´m the dead beauty ;.)

How´s yours, does it matter?

As long as your nose can smell the rose, who cares what it looks like. And have you noticed, movie stars who have their noses made thinner or smaller often end up with noses just like yours? And they pay thousands of dollars! You got yours for free :)

River, BIG LOL!
I can smell a rose, all good.
But puberty was a pain!

They PAY for that?! How sad.

Most important is that you have a nose to smell. No one is born perfect. Growing up can be a pain for most of us. Looking back, we can laugh.

Iris Flavia said...

Yes, now I laugh and do not care no more! :-)
Also.. noses grow with age, right? No idea of the direction, though!

...I was in a car accident and broke my nose. They operated to fix it, it was so painful.

You don’t look like an ugly duckling in any of the photos you have shared Iris. But kids can be cruel. And the best thing is that you don’t care what people say because it can hurt. And it takes a lot to get to that point too. Nice drawing and story today. I’m glad you’re back for Elle’s challenge. Hugs Erika

Hi Iris, people can be mean and kids can be the worst! The things I used to get called when I was a kid, they always focus on the one thing and never let go, don't they. Anyway, I see no ugly duckling in your photos :) I love your drawing today and how you made the nose the same shape and size in all three drawings, and of course, I love your storytelling! My day 17 will be up soon as soon as my camera charges! Thanks for joining me for the October theme at Art Journal Journey this month Elle/Empire of the Cat xx

Tom; i´m sorry, I went the other way, just let it be!

Erika, thank you, yes. It took a while to stand above it... Hugs and to... not being "normal! ;-)

Elle, oh, I did with the nose?????
It wasn´t on purpose! (I should not admit this, should I? ;-) YOU are the artist, clearly!)
It´s fun to join you, thank you for hosting!

Kids are so mean to each other. You're not the only one who went through stuff. I admire your fortitude for those times. And by the way -- you are anything but an ugly duckling -- and I've seen your childhood photos, too!

I have a small nose. Never really minded it.

Iris Flavia said...

Jeanie, as kid it´s OK, as to-be-woman... mimimi... not`? ;-)

William, we live with it, huh.

Kids can be cruel when they find a weak point in someone else.

yes sadly people can be mean and thoughtless. I say to people and my family that being normal is over-rated.
