It was by chance, it was cold and so I had the idea to make a Soljanka for the weekend - perfect for German Unity Day!
I first tasted this dish on a company-"meeting", a fun-event, with partners even, to Magdeburg, former GDR.
Delicious!!!
I sadly (?) deleted all pics of the making of, but reckon you know how it looks like what I did:
For... two persons/5 days (we don´t eat much) you need:
- 250g Kasseler (not the fat one!)
- 100 g (or more) Jagdwurst
- 1 tin of small tomatoes
- 3/4 glass of Letscho / Lecsó (you usually get this in a glass)
- 3 huge pickled gherkins
- 1/2 onion
- cat-sup, as much as you like
- salt, pepper, sweet paprika
- a blob of Crème fraîche for each portion
Cut everything into small cubes, listen to good music whilst doing so (it takes a while) 🎶.
Fry the meat, then add the Jagdwurst and onion-cubes.
Add the gherkin and tomatoes, then stop the frying-process by adding the Lecsó, maybe some water or all the Lecsó, how you like your thick soup.
Let simmer for 30 minutes, add cat-sup, the spices, taste and as final the blubb of the Crème fraîche.
Think of how dumb it is to separate countries by a wall - but, who knows, maybe this dish, Soljanka, or Solyanka only came to Germany because of the separation, the Russians sure made a difference, as did socialism.
There is many an "East German" dish us "Wessies" only learned when the wall fell!
With this and the following I join Rain with Thursday Art & Dinner Date: Masks.
We sure are sick of wearing FFP2-etc masks, especially when you wear glasses and especially in the cold half of the year when the shops are overly warm, your glasses fog under the mask, coming in from the cold, and you stagger half-blind around, forgetting half of what you wanted to buy...
So, I decided to go for this:
Henry 🦁
I think it will still take a long time till Germany is truly united. The wall in our heads is still there.
Three of my fav teamleaders were from East-Germany and with one I´m still in daily contact via WhatsApp. Just for fun. So... we work on it!!!

I am curious about the taste of soljanka. I am still wearing my face mask in public places when there are other people around.
It´s yummy! Maybe not in hot weather, though...
It does look like a cold weather sort of meal.
Those ingredients sound really interesting! And I'm still wearing my mask in stores or public spots and plan to, especially through winter. But I know what you mean about glasses. It gets frustrating.
Hi Iris!!! ♥♥♥
That dish looks really good and comforting, I love that you add a dollop of creme fraiche! Interesting that you are learning of new "Eastie" recipes!! I love your mask art! And yes, I'm also sick of wearing one, but you know what? I haven't even had a cold in nearly 3 years now and I'll keep wearing one until all germs are wiped off the planet lol...so I guess forever hee hee! ☺☺
The dish looks delicious thanks for the recipe.
I've never heard of this dish. It looks tasty.
Yes, I'm tired of masks, too, but I may never give them up lol I'm definitely liking your alternative better :)
Russian cooking was one thing in the 19th century and changed a lot during the Communist era. Before they had lavish banquets and haute cuisine from France. Then they had starvation (at least some of the time). Now they are trying to starve the world by conquering the grain basket of Ukraine -- but it isn't working.
Interesting recipe you gave. I don't think those meats are available here at all. Nor the beverage.
best... mae at maefood.blogspot.com
Oh! And I always thought gargoyles are bad! And wondered (too lazy to reseach) why the Hubby of a friend chose this name as alias - he´s a totally protective man, all solved now!
Love all your cute work! I don´t think I can write that well... Hence, no I really have no talent to participate...
William, yes, it´s cold here....
____
Jeanie, yes, for people with glasses summer is no problem, but now again, argh!
____
Rain, yes, we were separetd so long and together so long as well now, yet on TV they show still "Eastie"-recipes!
Thanks to socialism they had to imprivise and certain foods often were not available... and certainly Russian/Ukrainian recipes came in as they were allowed to travel there.
Did you knock on wood concerning the cold/no-cold? ;-)
____
Christine, you´re very welcome.
____
Divers and Sundry, there are many dishes we in the West had no idea of! Or they have different names, or totally different ingrtedients (due to nonavailability in socialism).
Yes, let´s fight wrinkles!
____
mae, no, I hope Put#n just drops you-know-what!The Ukrainians are so brave!
And yes, bread & co has become (as everything) very expensive...
Yes, crazy isn´t it?! Jamie Oliver sits "around the corner" in Great Britain, yet here you cannot buy those salted, marinated lemons, for example!
I'm knocking on wood NOW!!! ☺☺
Your meal looks good. We are having fish chowder with smoked haddock tonight. It is cooler today and raining hard. I got soaked today walking to catch the bus back home. Enjoy the evening.
It will be 22˚C here this afternoon so we will have salad for dinner. Your dish sounds perfect for a cool or cold day.
Rain, 👍😀

Bill, that calls for the song you gave me, "Rainy Day People"!
Not so much fun getting soaked in the cold, though!
That mask is great. I love how the face (especially) came out. And I'm not sure what kasseler is, but your dish looks very yummy. I hope you had a great Thursday. Hugs-Erika
I like the facemask drawing. Well done!
Your soljanka looks delicious, Iris! I wish I could say I didn't eat much. I love to eat, and it's hard to always be watching what I eat. I clearly remember when the Berlin Wall went up. I heard it about it on a a radio newscast when the GDR began building it. It was shocking, even to me as an eleven-year-old girl in northwestern Ontario. I like your mask, but I'm sick of wearing them too. But with winter coming, I'm going to have to be consistent with wearing one. Have a great October!
Schnitzel, hmmm, lecker.

Erika, Kassler is a "salted (cured) and slightly smoked cut of pork similar to gammon." - If not the fatty one it´s really yummy!
Thank you, that paper really made the face come out :-) Hugs!

Spare Parts and Pics, thank you :-)

Fundy Blue, I just saw the wall being up and luckily then coming down, but it sure was not fun to go to West Berlin. It was a strange feeling to drive through GDR.
Sadly, when we were in Berlin shortly I did not take the signs that we come from formerly one to another Germany.
No idea if they will force us again with the masks yet.
So far not, so: To a great October!
The soup looks delicious, but I don't think I would like it with the pickled gherkins and I don't even know what lesco is, I will have to google that one.
Your food looks delicious and i luv your mask art. Have a good weekend Iris.
Much❤love
had to laugh, Love your mask :)
